Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Facelift Spied Testing: Underbody CNG & Big Engine Upgrade Expected

India’s favorite tall boy hatchback is getting ready for a major mid-lifecycle update. A heavily camouflaged test mule of the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R facelift was recently spotted testing on Indian roads. Spy shots signaled cosmetic revisions, practical boot space improvements and a potential engine swap.

Fresh Look with Underbody CNG Setup

The spied prototype of Maruti Suzuki WagonR reveals something. Subtle design tweaks to the front fascia, including updated halogen headlamp detailing, a redesigned front grille and a smoothed-out bumper finish. At the rear, the facelift sports tweaked bumper styling with vertical reflectors replacing the older horizontal units.

However, the biggest functional highlight observed on the test mule is an underbody-mounted CNG tank setup. Relocating the CNG cylinder underneath the vehicle will solve the Wagon R CNG's biggest drawback: zero usable boot space. A similar thing was done with the recently rolled out Brezza CNG.

Mechanical Shift: Enter Z-Series Engine

While the lower variants are expected to retain the trusted 1.0L 3-cylinder engine (petrol/CNG), the higher-spec variants may get a swap. The older 1.2-litre K-Series engine could be replaced by Suzuki's new 1.2-litre Z-Series (Z12E) 3-cylinder engine. Already seen in the Swift, Dzire and 2026 Baleno facelift, this engine upgrade focuses heavily on delivering class-leading fuel efficiency for daily urban commuters.

The Wagon R has long been the ultimate urban commuter, but its CNG variants suffered greatly due to compromised boot utility. By introducing the underbody CNG tank layout, Maruti is addressing the car’s single biggest flaw. Meanwhile it is also locking down its dominance in the fleet and family taxi/commuter market. If paired with the ultra-frugal Z-Series engine, the Wagon R facelift will likely set a new benchmark for running efficiency in the budget hatchback segment.
