India-Made Maruti eVitara Scores 4 Stars in Japan NCAP Test
Google News

Summarize this blog post with:
- Secured an 'A Rank' in preventive safety
- Earned a 'B Rank' in structural crashworthiness
- Automatic emergency call system rated as Advanced Type II
Maruti Suzuki’s flagship electric SUV, the eVitara, which is manufactured locally at Suzuki’s Hansalpur plant in Gujarat, has achieved a 4-star safety rating in Japan. According to the New Car Assessment Program (JNCAP) safety evaluations, the model has got an 'A Rank' in preventive safety with top-tier pedestrian and cyclist AEB detection.
It will be interesting to note that the model has previously recorded a full 5-star rating in Bharat NCAP assessments. Japan’s rigorous framework includes complex intersection scenarios and specific body-region crash impact limits that resulted in a solid 4-star overall rating.
Breakup of JNCAP Safety Performance
The Japan NCAP assessment evaluates vehicles across three core pillars: Preventive Safety, Collision Safety and Emergency Response Systems. This electric Maruti car demonstrated solid structural integrity and active safety capabilities.

Where the eVitara Excelled and Slipped
Under JNCAP’s 5-level scoring system per test category, the Maruti eVitara delivered a mixed bag of results when exposed to updated 2026 test scenarios:
Top Performing Areas (Level 5):
- Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) for pedestrians (day/night) and cyclists.
- Driver protection during full-width frontal collisions and side impacts.
- Front-occupant rear-impact whiplash protection and pedestrian leg safety.
- Acceleration suppression for accidental accelerator pedal misapplication.
Lower Scoring Scenarios (Level 2 & Level 3):
- Level 2: AEB performance during crossing-intersection vehicle scenarios (vehicles approaching from the side).
- Level 3: Pedestrian head impact protection and AEB performance for right-turning vehicles across oncoming motorcycles.
Why the Ratings Differ from Bharat NCAP
The distinction between the eVitara’s 5-star Bharat NCAP rating and 4-star Japan safety rating is primarily driven by testing criteria rather than structural differences:
- Updated JNCAP 2026 Scenarios: Japan NCAP incorporates complex intersection collision avoidance testing (crossing traffic and turning across oncoming lanes) which are not part of basic crash testing protocols in India.
- Pedestrian & Rear Occupant Weightage: The Japanese rating places higher statistical weight on pedestrian head protection and rear-seat dummy dynamics in offset collisions.
Car Junction's Insights
We believe this JNCAP test result is a strong endorsement of India's manufacturing capability on the global stage. Achieving an 'A Rank' in preventive safety in Japan proves that Maruti Suzuki ADAS calibration and sensor suites meet international quality control standards.
We anticipate that this result will instill confidence among both domestic buyers in India and export markets in Europe and Asia. The 4-star result in JNCAP might seem slightly lower than its 5-star Bharat NCAP badge, JNCAP is notoriously strict with intersection AEB algorithms, an area where many global OEMs lose top points.
The 4-star rating might feel lower than BNCAP’s full score rating, but passing Japan’s strict testing parameters and scoring 4-stars is also a feat. On an international level, Maruti eVitara will compete against Hyundai Creta EV, Tata Curvv EV and MG ZS EV.
