Next Gen Suzuki WagonR Unveiled in Japan: India Launch Soon?

Suzuki has showcased the next generation WagonR in Japan, while Maruti Suzuki is preparing a separate WagonR facelift for India. According to reports, the Indian update is expected around December 2026.

The Japanese model features revised styling and reported safety upgrades. However, Indian buyers should not expect the same specifications or powertrain without official confirmation from Maruti Suzuki.

Japanese Suzuki WagonR Gets Updated Design

The seventh generation Japanese WagonR retains its tall body but receives a redesigned front end. Changes include:

• A large chrome grille
• Horizontal headlamps
• A revised bumper with black inserts

The Japanese model measures 3,395 mm long and has a 2,460 mm wheelbase. It is designed around Japan's Kei car regulations, so its dimensions differ from those of the Indian model.

The showcased car also features emergency braking assistance. Reported cabin updates include:

• A larger touchscreen
• Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
• Automatic climate control
• Flexible seating

These features have not all been officially confirmed.

Hybrid Powertrain Reported for Japan

The Japanese WagonR could use a 660cc, three cylinder petrol engine producing 54 PS and 58 Nm. An electric motor could add 10 PS and 29 Nm, paired with an e CVT automatic transmission.

Reported fuel efficiency exceeds 30 kmpl, with some reports suggesting up to 37 kmpl. Suzuki Japan has not confirmed these figures or the final powertrain specifications.

India WagonR Facelift: Expected Changes

Maruti Suzuki is expected to retain the Indian WagonR's familiar tall body design. The facelift could bring:

• Revised headlamps
• A redesigned grille and bumper
• Updated tail lamp elements

The cabin may receive a larger touchscreen than the current 7 inch unit. The company has not announced the final features or specifications.

Under the bonnet, the existing 1.0 litre petrol engine is expected to continue. The current 1.2 litre K12N engine could make way for the newer 1.2 litre, three cylinder Z series petrol engine.

The CNG variant could also receive an underbody cylinder layout. This would free up more luggage space, but the setup remains unconfirmed.

Expected Price and Rivals

The current Maruti Suzuki WagonR starts at Rs 4.99 lakh (ex showroom). The facelift is expected to cost more, although the brand has not announced prices or a confirmed launch date.

Buyers may also compare budget hatchbacks such as the Tata Tiago and Maruti Suzuki Celerio before deciding.

The Indian WagonR facelift could bring updated styling, improved cabin technology and a more practical CNG layout. Buyers should wait for official prices and specifications before making a purchase decision.

I believe the Indian WagonR facelift will need more than cosmetic changes to stand out. I would like Maruti Suzuki to improve cabin features, retain affordable running costs and make the CNG version more practical.
