Maruti Suzuki Swift CNG Automatic: A Closer Look

Table of Content
The Maruti Suzuki Swift CNG Automatic combines factory fitted CNG technology with a five speed automated manual transmission (AMT). It gives buyers a two pedal option for city driving while retaining the lower running cost potential of CNG.
The ZXi CNG AMT price starts at Rs. 8.86 lakh (ex showroom). It comes in 10 different colour options as well. Its main appeal is straightforward: everyday convenience, a familiar hatchback body and the option to run on petrol or CNG.
Let’s take a detailed look at the Maruti Suzuki Swift CNG Automatic. We will cover all the features and specifications of Swift that matter to buyers.
Maruti Suzuki Swift CNG Automatic: Engine and Driving Experience

The Swift uses Maruti Suzuki's 1.2 litre, three cylinder Z12E engine. In CNG mode, the motor produces around 68.80 bhp and 101.8 Nm of torque. Power delivery is lower than in petrol mode, so expectations should remain realistic.
The five speed AMT is the big change for buyers considering this version. Unlike a conventional automatic, an AMT uses an automated clutch and gear shifting system. The driver does not need to operate a clutch pedal, but gear changes can still be noticeable.
That distinction matters in stop and go traffic. The Swift CNG AMT removes the effort of repeated clutch operation, which can be tiring during a long commute. However, it should not be expected to shift as smoothly as a more expensive torque converter automatic.
Maruti Suzuki calls its system Auto Gear Shift, or AGS. Its September 2026 announcement confirms that the Swift's CNG engine is paired with a five speed AGS transmission. Drivers can also select gears manually without using a clutch pedal.
We got the Sizzling Red colour for a real world experience. It gives the hatchback a brighter look than other colours. Anyone interested in this colour should view the car in daylight and under dealer lighting before booking. The appearance of the paint may change with the lighting and surroundings.
The Swift's small size will also be helpful to first time owners. Its length is 3,860 mm, and its wheelbase is 2,450 mm. These dimensions make it a convenient size for narrow streets and common parking spaces.
Swift CNG Mileage, Price and Key Specifications

Fuel efficiency is one of the main reasons to consider the Swift CNG. Maruti Suzuki lists 32.85 km/kg for the manual CNG version, while the newer CNG AMT has a claimed figure of 35.34 km/kg. The latter figure was reported when the CNG AMT range launched in September 2026.
These are certified figures, not a promise of real world mileage. Traffic, tyre pressure, air conditioning use, passenger load and driving habits can all affect consumption. Owners should track their actual fuel use over several refills to estimate running costs.

The 55 litre figure refers to the cylinder's water capacity, not the quantity of CNG it holds by weight. Actual refuelling quantity varies with pressure and conditions. The listed price and specifications should be confirmed with an authorised Maruti Suzuki dealer before purchase.
The Swift CNG's running cost advantage depends on local fuel prices. Calculate the cost per kilometre using your actual mileage and CNG rate. Then compare it with the petrol version based on your usual driving distance.
A simple calculation helps: divide the local CNG price per kilogram by the mileage you actually achieve. This gives an approximate fuel cost per kilometre. Add petrol consumption where applicable, and remember that the higher purchase price must also be recovered over time.
Swift CNG Features, Cabin and Boot Space

The ZXi package is a step up from the entry level CNG variants, so before purchasing this option, it is important to compare the ZXi with the lower priced VXi package. On the Swift, available features include a touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, a wireless phone charger and rear AC vents (depending on the variant). Individual variant equipment can vary, but Maruti Suzuki's official Swift page states that the range features a 9 inch SmartPlay Pro+ system.
The touchscreen and phone connectivity help with navigation and music on a daily basis. Rear AC vents are also a great way to circulate cool air to the rear seat passengers. However, it's important for buyers to test the screen, pair their phone and inspect the controls in person when visiting a dealership.
The biggest issue is the boot space. Some models with twin cylinder configurations have cylinders positioned at the front, while the Swift CNG has a single cylinder inside the luggage area. The ZXi CNG AMT provides a boot capacity of 265 litres, but the usable boot shape and space can affect luggage loading.
When transporting a pram, heavy bags or large items, check the boot before purchase. Inspect whether a spare wheel is provided and where it is located. When purchasing a CNG car, you will need to take into account how much luggage flexibility you will have.
Safety equipment is no exception. The Swift comes with six airbags and electronic stability control; however, the specific equipment may vary depending on the variant and model year. Verify child seat anchor points, rear parking assistance and other features with the dealer rather than relying on the model description.
Swift CNG AMT Rivals: Which One Should You Compare?

The Swift is not the only hatchback to consider if you want CNG and less effort in traffic. The Tata Tiago iCNG is a direct alternative, as Tata has offered an AMT with selected CNG variants. Buyers can also compare the Hyundai Grand i10 Nios CNG and Maruti Suzuki Baleno CNG. The Baleno is larger and may suit households that need more cabin space.

Maruti Suzuki's September 2026 announcement listed the Baleno CNG range from Rs. 8.32 lakh (ex showroom). Its Swift CNG AMT range starts at Rs. 7.92 lakh ex showroom, while the ZXi version costs more. Confirm current variant prices before comparing offers.
The Swift's strongest argument is the combination of a compact footprint and CNG AMT convenience. The Tiago is worth checking for its CNG AMT option, while the Baleno may make more sense if extra cabin room matters. The Grand i10 Nios is another alternative for buyers focused on urban use.
Should You Buy the Swift ZXi CNG AMT?

The Swift ZXi CNG AMT could be a better option for buyers who spend a lot of time in city traffic and have convenient access to CNG stations. The automatic clutch operation reduces driving effort, while the CNG option can lower fuel expenses for high mileage users.
It is less attractive for buyers who regularly carry luggage.
The CNG cylinder takes up space. The AMT may not offer the smooth shifts of a conventional automatic. Buyers who mostly drive on roads should also compare the cost with that of a manual CNG variant.
Must take a test drive of the car before booking. Take it through heavy traffic, on a clear stretch of road, and over bumpy roads as well. Inspect low speed gear changes, visibility when parking, rear seat comfort and boot access. Always ask the dealer to confirm the final on road price, insurance, waiting period and warranty coverage.
If you're a first time buyer, the decision should be based on actual usage, not the claimed mileage. The Swift ZXi CNG AMT is definitely worth considering if you drive a lot, have access to CNG and want to experience clutch free driving. Before making the final decision, check out its competitors if storage space or smoother automatic shifts are more important.
