India’s First E85 Flex-Fuel Pump Opens in Delhi at Rs 82.12 Per Litre

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has officially inaugurated India’s first E85 fuel dispensing station at an Indian Oil outlet on Pusa Road, New Delhi. Formally introduced on World Environment Day, this high-ethanol blend contains 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent petrol. It is priced at Rs 82.12 per litre in the national capital, establishing an immediate Rs 20 price advantage over regular E20 petrol.
Efficiency Trade-offs and Commercial Vehicle Restrictions
While the retail price appears highly competitive, the chemical composition of high-ethanol fuel alters standard vehicle economics. Ethanol contains roughly one-third less energy density than pure fossil fuels.
Consequently, vehicles running on E85 are projected to experience a significant 25 percent to 35 percent drop in overall fuel efficiency compared to E20 petrol.
- Compatibility Limits: Standard production cars and motorcycles cannot use E85. Deploying it in uncalibrated engines causes severe mechanical degradation and sensor failures.
- Mass Market Two-Wheelers: Hero MotoCorp has introduced the Splendor+ and HF Deluxe Flex-Fuel commuter bikes, though public deliveries only commence next month.
- Passenger Car Shortage: No private flex-fuel passenger cars are currently sold. The Maruti Suzuki Wagon R Flex-Fuel exists but remains limited to the commercial sector.

Planned Infrastructure Expansion Roadmap
The government is prioritizing infrastructure development to encourage major automobile manufacturers to accelerate their respective flex-fuel vehicle development programs.
Dedicated branding will distinguish E85 dispensing stations from traditional fuel bays as the commercial network grows over the next 24 months.

The launch of E85 fuel represents a policy-driven push toward alternative energy rather than an immediate consumer transition. While the lower price helps offset poorer fuel economy, mass adoption depends on carmakers expanding their vehicle lineups. Automakers like Tata Motors and Toyota have committed to introducing compliant passenger models soon. If successful, the expanding fueling network could establish flex-fuel technology as a viable alternative alongside electric and hybrid vehicles.
