Maruti Wagon R Flex Fuel Introduced with E20 to E85 Fuel Compatibility
Google News

Maruti Suzuki has introduced the Wagon R Flex Fuel, making it India’s first passenger car designed to run on E85 fuel. The announcement comes at a time when the government is actively promoting the use of ethanol-blended fuels across the country. The initiative aims to reduce dependence on imported crude oil and encourage cleaner mobility solutions. With this launch, Maruti Suzuki has taken a significant step towards supporting the country's alternative fuel initiatives.
Wagon R Flex Fuel Supports Higher Ethanol Blends
The Wagon R Flex Fuel is powered by Maruti Suzuki's K12N 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. However, the engine and fuel system have been modified to support ethanol blends ranging from E20 to E85. These updates allow the vehicle to operate efficiently with higher ethanol content while meeting the requirements of flex-fuel technology.

Although the vehicle is now production-ready, Maruti Suzuki has not revealed details regarding power output, torque figures, or fuel efficiency. Apart from flex-fuel decals and a badge on the tailgate, the model looks largely similar to the standard Wagon R.

Initially Available for Fleet Operators
The Wagon R Flex Fuel has been showcased in prototype form before, including appearances in 2022 and at the Bharat Mobility Show 2024. However, the latest version is a production-spec model that will be supplied to fleet operators and ride-hailing companies such as Ola and Uber.
One of the biggest challenges for flex-fuel vehicles in India remains fuel availability. E85 fuel requires dedicated storage and dispensing infrastructure, which is currently limited across the country. To address this, the government has announced plans to establish up to 5,000 E85 fuel dispensing stations by the end of 2027.

The introduction of the Wagon R Flex Fuel marks an important step in India's alternative fuel journey. The growth of flex-fuel vehicles will largely depend on the availability of E85 fuel stations. The Wagon R Flex Fuel reflects Maruti Suzuki's focus on ethanol-powered mobility solutions.
