Hyundai Boulder SUV Patent Reveals Fresh Design Details

Hyundai has patented the design of the Boulder SUV in India, hinting at its future product strategy. While a patent does not confirm an India launch, it protects the design and reflects the company's long-term plans. The Boulder concept was first revealed at the New York Auto Show in April 2026.

The Hyundai Boulder is a rugged ladder frame SUV concept developed primarily for the North American market. It is expected to rival popular off road SUVs such as the Jeep Wrangler, Ford Bronco, and Land Rover Defender.

Hyundai Boulder SUV Design

The patented design closely resembles the Boulder concept but features a few notable differences. These changes suggest Hyundai could be preparing an electric version alongside the previously showcased ICE concept. The SUV retains its bold and boxy proportions with an upright stance. It also follows Hyundai's latest Art of Steel design philosophy.

Key design highlights include:

  • A closed front grille
  • Vertically stacked LED headlamps
  • Chunky bumpers
  • A flat bonnet

It also gets squared wheel arches, large alloy wheels, and all terrain tyres. The concept continues to feature rear hinged doors, giving it a distinctive appearance.

However, the patented version misses a few concept elements. Safari roof windows, roof mounted flood lights, and the wraparound rear glass are absent. These changes indicate Hyundai may be preparing a more production friendly design.

EV Version Could Be Under Development

The closed front grille further strengthens speculation about an electric version. Hyundai has not officially confirmed any powertrain details yet. Reports suggest the Boulder lineup could first introduce a pickup truck. The SUV version is expected to follow later. Both models are likely to share the same ladder frame architecture.

Rugged Cabin With Modern Technology

The Boulder concept features a rugged yet modern cabin layout. Hyundai has focused on blending physical controls with digital technology. The dashboard houses four compact displays for infotainment and vehicle functions. A neo retro steering wheel and rotary controls enhance usability. The concept also features a full width head up display.

Global Launch Expected Around 2030

Hyundai is developing the Boulder primarily for North America. The production model is expected to arrive around 2030.

The recent Indian design patent does not confirm local availability. However, it highlights India's growing importance in Hyundai's global intellectual property strategy. If launched, the Boulder will become Hyundai's first ladder frame SUV, expanding the brand's presence in the premium off road segment.
