Key Highlights
- 33.78% of Tata’s total passenger car sales since launch
- Registered highest annual volume in FY2024
- Only hatchback in a diesel powertrain
Tata Motors’ premium hatchback, the Altroz, has achieved a significant sales milestone in October 2026. This time, the model surpassed the 3.5 lakh unit cumulative domestic sales mark in India.
Introduced in January 2020 as the company's answer to the premium hatchback segment, the Altroz reached 3,49,185 units by the end of September 2026. This bridged the remaining shortfall of 815 units in early October. The model continues to serve as a core volume driver. Currently it represents roughly 10% of Tata cars total vehicle sales and over a third of its passenger car footprint since debut.
Year-by-Year Sales Track Record & Segment Share
The Altroz experienced rapid momentum post-launch despite launching right before COVID-19 disruptions. It crossed 60,000 annual sales in both FY2021 and FY2022, before reaching its highest single-year sales peak in FY2024. That was only possible due to the arrival of its twin-cylinder iCNG technology.

Variant Diversity & Product Evolution
Priced between Rs. 6.00 lakh and Rs. 10.75 lakh (ex-showroom), the Altroz stands out for offering a wide array of powertrain and transmission options across its lifecycle.
- Powertrain Options: Offers an 88hp 1.2-litre petrol, 74hp iCNG and a 90hp 1.5-litre diesel engine. This makes it the sole remaining diesel option in India's hatchback segment.
- Transmission Choices: Gearbox duties are handled by a 5-speed manual, a 5-speed AMT and a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic (DCA).
- Updates & Adjustments: Received a mid-life facelift in May 2025, alongside price rationalization benefits of up to Rs. 98,000 following GST 2.0 implementations in late 2025.
Car Junction's Insights
We anticipate that the Tata Altroz will remain a strategic asset for Tata Motors. This is by maintaining a steady base of buyers who value its 5-star Global NCAP safety score and diverse powertrain options, particularly the diesel variant.
We believe the growing shift in consumer preference toward sub-4m compact SUVs and micro-SUVs (like the Tata Punch) will keep pressure on premium hatchbacks. This can be seen in terms of rapid growth. Going forward, the Tata Motors’ festive discount this October may also help the model further with more sales. The Altroz will rely heavily on its CNG and automatic variants to hold its ground against key market rivals like the Maruti Suzuki Baleno, Hyundai i20, and Toyota Glanza.
