End of an Era: Maruti Suzuki Ignis Bids Farewell to India
Google News

Maruti Suzuki has officially delisted the Ignis from its Nexa premium dealership lineup, on 16th April 2026. Launched in 2017 as a "Premium Urban Compact," the Ignis made a niche for itself with its unconventional design and tall-boy stance. But it now makes way for the brand’s evolving future strategy.
A Strategic Departure
The decision to discontinue the Ignis comes as the brand focuses on new models to meet modern consumer preferences. While the Ignis remained a consistent performer for the Nexa chain, its sales had plunged in recent years. And over time, more rugged rivals like the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter gave tough competition.
This "necessary goodbye" allows the manufacturer to reallocate production capacity toward higher-demand models and upcoming electric vehicle projects.
Legacy and Key Highlights
Throughout its seven-year tenure, the Ignis was celebrated for its quirky aesthetics and peppy driving dynamics. It offered a unique blend of hatchback agility and SUV-inspired ground clearance. Key attributes that defined the Ignis include:
- Distinctive Design: The "Neo-Retro" styling featured wheel arches, projector headlamps with LED DRLs, and the iconic three-slat "Adidas" motif on the C-pillar.
- Refined Powertrain: Powered by the 1.2-litre K-Series petrol engine, delivering 82bhp and 113Nm, paired with both manual and AMT gearboxes.
- Customization: One of the first mass-market cars in India, offering extensive factory-level personalization, including roof wraps and colorful interior inserts.
- Safety & Comfort: Equipped with dual airbags, ABS with EBD, and ISOFIX mounts as standard, alongside a 7-inch SmartPlay infotainment system.
The departure of the Ignis signifies a shift in Maruti Suzuki’s entry-level premium strategy. While it may not have achieved the massive volumes of the Baleno or Swift, the Ignis attracted a younger fanbase. Its exit clears the stage for a new generation of compact vehicles, likely leaning toward hybridization and electrification.
