Summarize this blog post with:
The Indian luxury electric SUV market now offers buyers three very different options from Mercedes Benz, BMW and Tesla. The Mercedes GLC EV costs Rs. 78.50 lakh (ex showroom) and sits above both the BMW iX1 LWB and the Tesla Model Y. It gets a bigger battery, all wheel drive and a claimed range of up to 711 km.
The BMW iX1 LWB goes for rear seat comfort and everyday usability. The Tesla Model Y brings a cabin built around technology, plus different powertrain options.
All three chase premium EV buyers, but the prices and equipment gap is wide. So, which one is best for Indian buyers? Let’s compare prices, range, performance, features and practicality.
My take: the answer won’t be the same for everyone.
Mercedes GLC EV vs BMW iX1 LWB vs Tesla Model Y: Price and Specifications

Price is one of the biggest differences between these three electric SUVs. The Mercedes GLC EV costs considerably more than the other two models. However, it also gets a more powerful dual motor setup and a larger battery.
The BMW iX1 LWB is positioned as a more accessible entry point into BMW's electric SUV range. The Tesla Model Y starts at an even lower price, although its higher variants cost more.
Here is a quick comparison of their key specifications:

Tesla figures refer to the Model Y Premium RWD. Tesla also offers an AWD Model Y L Premium. BMW's range uses the MIDC test cycle, while Mercedes and Tesla quote WLTP figures. Battery and performance figures are variant specific.
The Mercedes GLC EV is Rs. 26.10 lakh more expensive than the BMW iX1 LWB. The difference increases to Rs. 27.61 lakh compared with the entry level Tesla Model Y.
However, these models do not offer identical powertrain configurations. The Mercedes gets all wheel drive as standard, while the BMW uses front wheel drive. Tesla offers rear wheel drive and all wheel drive configurations.
BMW India lists the iX1 LWB at Rs. 52.70 lakh (ex showroom). Tesla's India configurator lists the Model Y Premium RWD at Rs. 50.89 lakh and Model Y L Premium AWD at Rs. 61.99 lakh.Mercedes Benz India has priced the GLC 400 4MATIC at Rs. 78.50 lakh (ex showroom).
That gap matters, especially if you’re moving from a premium petrol or diesel SUV. But the Mercedes price does buy you a bigger battery, more power and extra luxury kit.
My take: it’s the only one of the three that feels like a proper step up.
Mercedes GLC EV vs BMW iX1 LWB vs Tesla Model Y: Range and Performance

Range matters. Most buyers look past battery size and ask how far the SUV goes between charging stops.
The Mercedes GLC EV claims up to 711 km on a single charge. It uses a 94 kWh usable NMC battery and an 800V electrical architecture. Mercedes Benz India says that’s a combined WLTP range certified by ARAI.
Two permanently excited synchronous electric motors sit under the skin. Together they make 489 hp and 800 Nm of torque. Power goes to all four wheels through the 4MATIC all wheel drive system.
Mercedes claims 0 to 100 km/h in 4.3 seconds. Maximum DC charging capacity is 330 kW. Under suitable conditions, the company claims up to 303 km of additional range in 10 minutes.
The 800V architecture supports higher charging speeds at compatible stations. However, Indian buyers will need access to suitable high power chargers to benefit fully from this capability.
The BMW iX1 LWB takes a different approach. It uses a 66.4 kWh battery paired with a single electric motor. This motor produces 204 hp and 250 Nm of torque. Power goes to the front wheels through a single speed transmission. The SUV takes around 8.6 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h.
BMW currently lists a claimed range of up to 546 km under the MIDC test cycle. It also highlights 11 kW home charging support through the BMW Wallbox.
The Tesla Model Y offers two different powertrain options in India. The entry level Premium RWD gets a single rear motor and a claimed WLTP range of up to 500 km. It produces 295 hp and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds.
The Model Y L Premium AWD sits higher in the range. Tesla claims up to 681 km of WLTP range for this version. It also gets an all wheel drive setup.
This gives Tesla cars buyers more flexibility based on their budget and driving requirements. However, the higher range version also costs more than the entry level RWD model.
One important point needs consideration here. The Mercedes and Tesla figures use WLTP, while BMW quotes MIDC. These testing methods differ, so the figures should not be treated as directly comparable. Real world range will also depend on speed, weather, traffic and air conditioning usage.
Mercedes GLC EV Features vs BMW and Tesla

The three SUVs follow different approaches to cabin design and technology. Mercedes focuses on luxury equipment and digital features. BMW gives more attention to passenger comfort, while Tesla follows a minimalist cabin layout.
The biggest highlight inside the Mercedes GLC EV is its 39.1 inch MBUX Hyperscreen. It stretches across the dashboard and combines multiple display functions into one seamless screen.
The SUV also gets the Mercedes Benz Operating System (MB.OS). This system manages infotainment, vehicle functions, charging and driver assistance features.
Other important features include:
- Burmester 3D surround sound system with Dolby Atmos.
- 15 speakers with 670W output.
- Panoramic SKY CONTROL roof with illuminated stars.
- Heated front seats and front seat massage function.
- Active ambient lighting.
- Wireless smartphone charging.
- 360 degree camera and parking assistance.
- Nine airbags and Level 2 ADAS.
The Mercedes Benz cars also gets an illuminated grille with 942 animated backlit elements. This gives the front design a distinctive appearance.
Practicality is another important part of its equipment package. The boot offers 570 litres of space, expandable to 1,740 litres. It also gets a 128 litre front storage compartment, commonly called a frunk.
Keep in mind that these features are for the India spec GLC EV. Some driver assistance functions, including India adapted braking and blind spot features, are scheduled for December 2026.
The BMW iX1 LWB takes a more conventional approach to its dashboard. It gets a curved display setup with a 10.25 inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.7 inch infotainment screen.
The system runs BMW Operating System 9. It supports touch and voice controls, along with customisable widgets.
Its main features include:
- Panoramic glass roof with an electric roller blind.
- Harman Kardon sound system with 12 speakers.
- Veganza upholstery.
- Digital Key Plus.
- Adaptive LED headlights.
- Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The BMW cars also focuses on rear seat comfort. Its longer wheelbase provides additional cabin space compared with the standard wheelbase version.
The rear seats offer a recline angle of up to 28.5 degrees. BMW lists boot capacity at 490 litres, expandable to 1,600 litres with the rear seats folded. This makes the BMW car a practical option for buyers who regularly travel with family members. Its smaller exterior footprint also makes it easier to consider for urban use.
Tesla follows a minimalist approach inside the Model Y. Unlike Mercedes and BMW, it does not use a traditional instrument cluster behind the steering wheel.
Most vehicle functions operate through the central touchscreen. This includes navigation, entertainment, climate settings and several vehicle controls.
The Model Y also gets:
- Large central touchscreen.
- Over the air software updates.
- Connected vehicle functions.
- Panoramic glass roof.
- Powered front seats.
- Driver assistance features.
- Large rear luggage compartment.
Tesla India lists a five seat layout for the Model Y Premium RWD. The Model Y L Premium adds a longer wheelbase, six seat configuration.
The minimalist dashboard may appeal to buyers comfortable with touchscreen controls. However, drivers who prefer physical buttons for frequently used functions may need time to adjust.
The Tesla car's biggest difference is its software led approach. The company regularly delivers compatible software improvements through over the air updates.
Charging, Practicality and Daily Ownership

Charging access can influence the ownership experience as much as battery capacity. This becomes particularly important for buyers who plan to use their electric SUVs for regular highway journeys.
The Mercedes GLC EV has an advantage on paper with its 800V architecture and 330 kW DC charging capacity. Mercedes claims it can add up to 303 km of range in 10 minutes under suitable conditions.
It also offers an interesting charging benefit for Indian customers. Buyers who opt out of the complimentary AC wall box can receive 2,500 kWh of charging credits. These credits remain valid for 24 months, subject to the company's terms and conditions.
The brand says its MB.CHARGE Public network provides access to more than 22,000 charging points across India. This could help owners plan public charging stops more easily.
The BMW iX1 LWB supports up to 11 kW AC home charging. DC fast charging is also supported at up to 130 kW. The brand says charging from 10% to 80% takes approximately 32 minutes in suitable conditions. Honestly, I’d treat that as a best case until I’d seen it on a real highway stop.
Tesla gives you access to its own charging ecosystem and home charging solutions. But check that compatible charging points exist along your regular routes.
For daily city use, all three work as family electric SUVs. Your running expenses come down to electricity tariffs, charging habits and how far you drive.
Here are a few ownership considerations:
- Home charging: Check whether your parking space supports a dedicated charger.
- Public charging: Check compatible fast chargers around your city and highway routes.
- Running expenses: Calculate electricity costs using your local per unit tariff.
- Battery warranty: Compare battery coverage and vehicle warranty conditions.
- After sales support: Check service centre availability and repair arrangements in your city.
Unlike petrol and diesel cars, EVs don’t need regular engine oil changes. But tyre wear, brakes, suspension and other maintenance costs still apply.
Actual ownership cost also hinges on insurance, depreciation and replacement parts. So ask for complete ownership packages before you book. I’d do that before any test drive.
Which Luxury Electric SUV Should You Buy?

The Mercedes GLC EV, BMW iX1 LWB and Tesla Model Y target different types of premium EV buyers. There is no single winner across every category.
Choose the Mercedes GLC EV if:
- You want a more powerful luxury electric SUV.
- You prefer an all wheel drive powertrain.
- You want a larger battery and longer claimed range.
- You value premium cabin technology and comfort.
- Your budget allows spending Rs. 78.50 lakh (ex showroom).
The GLC EV is a good option for buyers who want a well equipped luxury SUV with strong performance. Its larger battery, 800V charging architecture and extensive cabin equipment justify its higher positioning.
However, its purchase price is considerably higher than the other two options. Buyers should also consider the availability of high power charging infrastructure.
Choose the BMW iX1 LWB if:
- You want to enter BMW's electric SUV range at a lower price.
- Rear seat comfort is important.
- You mostly drive within cities and nearby regions.
- You prefer a familiar dashboard layout.
- You want a five seat luxury electric SUV.
The iX1 LWB offers a practical balance of space, equipment and price. Its longer wheelbase makes it particularly relevant for families with frequent rear seat passengers.
However, its 204 hp front wheel drive setup is less powerful than the other two options. Its smaller battery also gives it a lower claimed range than the Mercedes.
Choose the Tesla Model Y if:
- You prefer a minimalist cabin and touchscreen based controls.
- You want access to Tesla's software ecosystem.
- You prefer a lower starting purchase price.
- You want the flexibility of rear wheel drive and all wheel drive options.
The Model Y is the more affordable starting point among these three SUVs. Its 500 km WLTP range is also sufficient for many regular city and highway driving requirements.
Buyers looking for additional range can consider the Model Y L Premium AWD. However, its price increases to Rs. 61.99 lakh (ex showroom).
One drawback is its minimalist cabin design. Some buyers may also prefer the more conventional luxury interiors offered by Mercedes and BMW.
Final Verdict
The Mercedes GLC EV is the most powerful and feature rich option in this comparison. The BMW iX1 LWB makes more sense for buyers who want rear seat comfort and a lower purchase price. Meanwhile, the Tesla Model Y offers a different technology focused experience with a lower starting price. Your final decision should depend on your budget, charging access, passenger requirements and preferred driving experience.
