The Indian automotive market saw a reshuffling in the leaderboards this February, with the SUVs mostly dominating the sales charts. Tata Nexon (including its EV version) emerged as the best-selling passenger vehicle, which lies in SUV car category. According to the latest sales data, the top 10 models collectively accounted for 1,70,127 units. This is 8.76% year-on-year (YoY) growth compared to February 2025. Despite this annual gain, the market saw a sequential month-on-month (MoM) decline of 5.9% from January 2026.
The month was characterized by a close contest between Tata Motors and Maruti Suzuki. Tata vehicles capture two of top three positions, with Nexon leading at 19,430 units, registering 26.59% YoY increase. The Tata Punch followed closely in third place, recording 18,748 units.
Maruti Suzuki maintained the highest volume presence with six models in the top 10. The Maruti Dzire secured the second spot overall with 19,326 units, registering an aggressive 31.52% YoY growth. Interestingly, established hatchbacks like the Wagon R, Swift and Baleno experienced significant YoY declines, reflecting a consumer shift toward SUVs.
With a near 8.76% YoY growth on all top 10 cars, the market also saw a sequential month-on-month (MoM) decline of 5.9%. Tata Nexon registered a YoY growth of 26.59% with 19,430 units sold this February vs 15,349 units sold in Feb-2025. A comprehensive comparison table is given below for added context.

The February figures highlight several critical shifts in the Indian passenger vehicle landscape:
The February 2026 sales data confirms that the "SUV-first" trend in India is maturing now. While Maruti Suzuki retains top volume through its diverse lineup, Tata Motors has successfully captured the high-value SUV segments. The marginal MoM decline suggests a normalization of demand following the January peak. But the healthy YoY growth indicates that consumer sentiment remains positive, particularly for feature-rich and multi-fuel vehicles.
