
Electric car sales in India continued their strong upward momentum in CY 2026, supported by improving charging infrastructure, lower running costs, government incentives, and increasing consumer acceptance of electric mobility.
Tata Motors remained the clear market leader with the widest EV portfolio, followed by Mahindra, MG Motor, and new entrants like VinFast. Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai also continued expanding their presence in the growing EV space.
Total electric car sales in calendar year 2026 (January–April) stood at 79,063 units. Sales started at 18,851 units in January, declined to 14,438 units in February, rebounded strongly to 23,097 units in March, and remained stable at 22,677 units in April 2026, as per VAHAN data.

Tata Motors continued to dominate India’s EV market with a total of 31,604 units in the January–April 2026 period. The company started the year with 8,410 units in January, followed by a decline to 6,002 units in February. However, demand recovered strongly in March with 8,685 units, and remained stable in April at 8,507 units.
Tata’s strong performance is driven by its wide EV portfolio, including the Punch EV, Nexon EV, and Harrier EV, which continue to attract both urban and semi-urban buyers.
Mahindra recorded 18,153 units in CY 2026 (Jan–Apr), supported by its new-generation electric SUV lineup. Sales stood at 3,889 units in January, dipped to 3,219 units in February, but recovered strongly to 5,651 units in March and 5,394 units in April.
Mahindra’s growth is driven by its Born Electric SUV range, including the BE 6 and XEV 9E, which are gaining strong early traction in the Indian EV market.
MG Motor continued to maintain a strong position in the EV space with total sales of 19,036 units in CY 2026. The company recorded 4,931 units in January, 3,577 units in February, 5,550 units in March, and 4,978 units in April.
MG’s EV performance is mainly supported by models like the MG ZS EV and MG Comet EV, which continue to attract urban buyers looking for compact and premium electric mobility solutions.
VinFast, a relatively new entrant in the Indian EV market, recorded 2,840 units during CY 2026 (Jan–Apr). The brand started with 448 units in January, followed by 422 units in February, 739 units in March, and a strong jump to 1,231 units in April, showing improving market acceptance.
VinFast’s early growth is supported by models like the VF6 and VF7, with more products expected to strengthen its portfolio further.
Maruti Suzuki continues to build its EV presence with limited offerings in the market. The company recorded 2,667 units in CY 2026 (Jan–Apr), starting from 221 units in January, 225 units in February, 999 units in March, and 1,222 units in April, showing a steady upward trend.
Maruti’s current EV presence is driven by the eVitara, while upcoming models like an electric MPV and compact EV hatchback are expected to expand its portfolio.
Hyundai recorded 1,707 units in CY 2026 (Jan–Apr), maintaining a steady but smaller presence in the EV segment. Sales stood at 343 units in January, 335 units in February, 517 units in March, and 512 units in April. The brand continues to focus on premium EV offerings and is expected to strengthen its lineup in the coming years.
BYD recorded 1,502 units in CY 2026 (Jan–Apr), showing steady demand in the premium EV segment. Sales moved from 246 units in January to 340 units in February, 449 units in March, and 467 units in April, supported by growing interest in electric SUVs and premium EV offerings.
Kia recorded 1,443 units during the January–April 2026 period. Monthly sales stood at 321 units in January, 304 units in February, 477 units in March, and 341 units in April, reflecting stable but limited EV penetration in the Indian market.
PCA (Stellantis brands) remained a niche player in the EV segment, recording 111 units in CY 2026 (Jan–Apr). Sales stood at 21 units in January, 30 units in February, 25 units in March, and 35 units in April, indicating a very small but consistent presence.
