India-EU Free Trade Deal to Lower Car Import Duties, Luxury Models May Get Cheaper
Google News

India and the European Union are reportedly on the verge of signing a long-awaited Free Trade Agreement (FTA), and it could soon change the automotive market in the country. After years of discussions, both sides are close to finalising a deal that will reduce import duties on European cars sold in India. If announced as expected, this agreement may open the doors for more global models to enter the Indian market at better prices.
Import Duties to Drop in Phases
As per reports, the FTA will bring down import duties on fully built European cars from the current 70–110 percent to 40 percent in the first phase. Over the next few years, the tariff is expected to reduce further to as low as 10 percent. However, this benefit will apply only to cars imported as complete units and priced above 15,000 euros (around Rs 16 lakh).
In addition, the reduced tariff will apply to a limited quota of imported cars every year. This step will help prevent a sudden rise in imports while still giving European brands better access to Indian buyers. Perhaps, this phased plan also allows local manufacturers time to adjust to stronger competition.
Electric Vehicles Get Special Protection
Interestingly, electric vehicles from Europe will not enjoy immediate tariff cuts. Import duties on European EVs will remain unchanged for the first five years after the agreement is approved. Only after this period will EV tariffs begin to reduce gradually.
This move aims to protect India’s growing EV industry. Domestic manufacturers like Tata Motors and Mahindra have invested heavily in electric mobility. Therefore, the government wants to give them time to strengthen their position before opening the market to global EV brands. However, after five years, European EVs may also become more accessible.
Which Brands Will Benefit the Most
Several European carmakers are expected to gain from this agreement. Luxury brands such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, and Land Rover already assemble many models in India, so their locally built cars may not see price changes. However, their performance and special edition models that arrive as full imports could become more affordable.
In addition, high-end sports car brands like Porsche, Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Maserati may also benefit. Their cars, which currently carry very high price tags due to heavy duties, could see noticeable reductions. Mass-market European brands like Volkswagen and Skoda might find it easier to bring in global models that were earlier too expensive to import.
When Will Prices Actually Drop?
While the announcement could happen soon, price changes will not appear overnight. The agreement still needs legal approval and ratification. Therefore, real-world benefits may take a year or two to show.
Still, this deal signals a major shift. Over time, Indian buyers could enjoy more choice, better technology, and improved pricing on premium European cars.
