Renault’s Strategic Leap: Bridger to Get Turbo-Petrol and EV Versions
Google News

Renault India is intensifying its product lineup with the upcoming Bridger, a sub-four-metre SUV poised to disrupt the compact segment. In a significant move for the brand’s "2.0 Strategy," Renault has confirmed that the Bridger will feature a potent new turbocharged petrol engine. Also, it’ll serve as the foundation for the company’s first Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) in the Indian market.
Multi-Powertrain Strategy and Local Production
The Bridger is built on the Renault Global Modular Platform (RGMP), shared with the new Duster. This flexible architecture allows Renault to offer a diverse range of powertrains to cater to different consumer needs. The global spec utilizes a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol unit producing approximately 113bhp, the Indian iteration is expected to deliver the same. With this, the model is poised to challenge established rivals like the Tata Punch and Hyundai Exter.
Furthermore, the introduction of a BEV iteration marks a historic milestone for Renault India. While the brand sells EVs globally, the Bridger-based electric SUV will be its first dedicated foray into the domestic green mobility space. This model is also slated to make India a core production hub for export markets.
Design and Utility Highlights
The production version of the Bridger will retain several "butch" SUV traits showcased in the concept:
- Rugged Exterior: Features an illuminated "RENAULT" grille, vertically stacked LED taillamps, and a tailgate-mounted spare wheel.
- Practical Cabin: A segment-benchmarking 200mm of knee room and a high driving position.
- Modern Tech: Expected to house a dual-screen setup, Level 2 ADAS, and advanced connectivity suites.
The Renault Bridger represents a pivotal shift as it transitions from a budget-focused portfolio to a more technologically advanced lineup. By offering both a high-output turbo-petrol engine and a fully electric version, Renault is positioning the Bridger as a lifestyle vehicle. If priced within the 6 lakh to 10 lakh bracket, it could bridge the gap between entry-level hatchbacks and mid-size SUVs.
