Mercedes-Benz India launched the Mercedes AMG E 53 4MATIC+ on July 23, 2026, at Rs 1.45 crore (ex showroom). During the launch event, I had the opportunity to interact with Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes Benz India, and Sergius Barretto, Managing Editor, Autocar India, to understand the company's strategy behind the new performance sedan and the changing preferences of premium car buyers in India.
Apart from unveiling the new Mercedes AMG E 53, the carmaker also announced that all its cars sold in India since January 2026 are compatible with E20 fuel.
Mercedes Benz sees plug in hybrids as a bridge to EVs
Speaking exclusively during the interaction, Santosh Iyer explained why Mercedes-Benz believes plug-in hybrid technology is an important step towards full electric mobility.
"Many customers are interested in electric mobility, but not everyone is ready to switch to a full EV today. That's where plug-in hybrids make sense. They act as a bridge by giving customers the confidence of a combustion engine along with the quiet and smooth driving experience of an electric vehicle. With the new Mercedes-AMG E 53, we are bringing together everyday usability and AMG performance in one package. It offers strong electric capability for daily commutes while delivering the driving dynamics our customers expect from AMG. We believe this powertrain is an important step in helping more buyers transition towards electric mobility at their own pace," said Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO, Mercedes-Benz India.
His comments underline the company's view that hybrid technology can help buyers gradually move towards electric mobility without changing their driving habits overnight.
Key highlights of the Mercedes-AMG E 53:
- Price: Performance Edition at Rs 1.45 crore and Racing Edition at Rs 1.48 crore (both ex showroom).
- Racing Edition: Gets the AMG Driver's Package, increasing the electronically limited top speed from 250 kmph to 280 kmph.
- Powertrain: Plug-in hybrid setup producing 585 hp and 750 Nm of combined output.
- Performance: Accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in just 4 seconds.
- Battery: Equipped with a 21.2 kWh battery pack.
- DC Fast Charging: Charges from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes using a 60 kW DC charger.
- AC Charging: Takes around 2.25 hours for a full charge with an 11 kW AC charger.
- Key Rivals: Competes with the BMW M5, Audi RS 5 Sportback, Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, and Maserati Ghibli Trofeo in India's premium performance luxury sedan segment.
This combination allows owners to enjoy electric driving for everyday commutes while maintaining the strong performance expected from an AMG model.
Autocar India's Sergius Barretto on the AMG E 53
Sharing his views on the newly launched sedan cars, Sergius Barretto, Managing Editor, Autocar India, said the AMG E 53 is designed for buyers who are "younger at heart."
When asked about the audience Mercedes is targeting with this car, Mr. Barretto said the brand has always represented luxury, but the AMG E 53 introduces a stronger sporty character for customers looking for performance alongside premium comfort.
He also highlighted the car's RACE START function, saying it provides an additional burst of power that makes the AMG E 53 one of the quickest AMG sedans currently available in India.

Mercedes expands into India's growing lifestyle segment
Alongside the launch, the company announced its partnership as the Title Partner of the Indian Padel Tour for the 2026-27 season. The tour will host 19 professional tournaments across 10 Indian cities, reflecting the rapid growth of padel among urban, premium lifestyle consumers.
Speaking during the event, Jigar Doshi, Co-Founder of PadelPark India, said the Indian Padel Tour was created with a simple ambition; to build the competitive ecosystem that every emerging sport needs.
Together, the launch of the AMG E 53, brand’s focus on plug in hybrid technology, and its investment in India's growing padel ecosystem show how the company is strengthening its connection with buyers who value performance, technology, and an active lifestyle.
