BMW India has launched the new BMW 7 Series facelift and i7 electric sedan in India, with prices starting at Rs 1.95 crore. The updated luxury sedans arrive as a mid-life update, four years after the G70 generation debuted. Meanwhile, the BMW i7 M70 xDrive, the top electric variant, is priced at Rs 2.65 crore (ex showroom).

BMW now offers the flagship range with petrol and electric powertrains. The new i7 M70 xDrive also joins the lineup as the most powerful 7 Series ever. Also, from now on, both the 740 petrol and i7 eDrive50 will be locally assembled at its Chennai plant. Meanwhile, the i7 M70 will come to India as a completely built up unit.

BMW 7 Series Facelift: New Luxury Class Design

The new BMW 7 Series gets a sharper exterior while retaining its large and imposing proportions. It measures 5.3 metres long and has a 3.25 metre wheelbase.

The front end design follows BMW’s latest luxury class styling direction. It gets an illuminated BMW Iconic Glow Kidney Grille and new crystal headlights.

The BMW Individual crystal headlights use diamond cut glass elements produced by Swarovski. Adaptive LED headlights with Cornering Lights and matrix high beam assistance are standard. The lighting system uses BMW Selective Beam technology and offers a non dazzling range of up to 600 metres.

BMW has also introduced a larger matt finish badge between the kidney grille and bonnet. Two new character lines extend across the bonnet. The side profile gets a new character line stretching from the front apron towards the rear. Flush fitting door handles further clean up the exterior.

The rear gets newly designed slim tail lights that extend into the rear section. A high gloss black diffuser comes standard with the M Sport package.

The M Sport package also adds M specific bumpers, side skirts, Shadowline elements and 20 inch alloy wheels. It also gets M Sport brakes with Dark Blue metallic callipers.

BMW i7 M70 Gets More Aggressive Look

The new BMW i7 M70 xDrive gets several styling changes that separate it from the regular 7 Series and i7. It gets larger air curtains, a bigger central air intake and a small spoiler lip. The illuminated kidney grille also gets a darker treatment.

The M70 features smoke black crystals in its BMW Individual crystal headlights. M badges appear around the exterior, including near the Hofmeister kink. The model also gets black mirror caps, black window surrounds and black side skirts. At the rear, a wide diffuser and black M spoiler add a sportier appearance.

The M70 rides on new 21 inch M aerodynamic wheels with mixed size tyres. It also gets powerful M Sport brakes with black high gloss callipers.

BMW 7 Series Interior

The new BMW 7 Series gets several cabin updates focused on digital technology, rear seat comfort and everyday convenience. Key interior highlights include:

  • BMW Panoramic iDrive: The new system combines BMW Panoramic Vision, the central touchscreen and a 3D Head Up Display. It runs on the new BMW Operating System X.
  • BMW Panoramic Vision: It projects information across the lower section of the windscreen. Drivers can move selected widgets from the central display using drag and drop controls.
  • 17.9 inch Central Display: The free floating touchscreen gets a 3,340 x 1,440 pixel resolution and matrix backlighting.
  • 14.6 inch Passenger Screen: The front passenger gets a dedicated touchscreen without needing a separate BMW ID or profile. The display automatically turns dark when the driver looks towards it.
  • 31.3 inch 8K Theatre Screen: The large screen extends from the roof for rear passengers. It works with the Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround Sound System with Dolby Atmos.
  • Executive Lounge Seats: The rear seats offer coordinated adjustments and reclining functionality. The backrest can provide a torso angle of up to 43 degrees.
  • Radar Based Automatic Doors: The new automatic doors use radar technology and Soft Close functionality. BMW says this makes their operation smoother and quicker.
  • Sky Lounge Sunroof: The panoramic glass sunroof can feature more than 40 LED lights. Its illuminated pattern draws inspiration from the seat quilting.
  • Premium Cabin Materials: BMW offers Individual Merino Leather and CraftedClarity glass controls across the cabin.
  • Wireless Charging: The illuminated smartphone tray supports inductive charging at up to 15 watts. It also features an Alcantara finish and magnetic phone holder.

BMW 7 Series Facelift: Engine And Range

BMW is continuing the 7 Series' petrol version with the 740. It uses a 3.0 litre six cylinder petrol engine with 400 hp and 540 Nm. The engine comes with an eight speed automatic gearbox and sends power to the rear wheels. The 740 takes 5.4 seconds to go from 0 to 100 kmph.

It has a maximum speed of 250 kmph, which is electronically limited.

The i7 eDrive50 gets a 112.5 kWh battery and produces 455 hp with 660 Nm of system torque. Can go from 0 to 100 kmph in 5.5 seconds. It has been topped-up with an enhanced battery that extends its WLTP range to 728 km. This is 125 km more than the outgoing model.

The range figure makes the i7 eDrive50 the highest range model in the updated lineup. BMW has also improved the electric drivetrain and battery technology.

The i7 M70 xDrive sits above the eDrive50 and uses two electric motors. It produces 680 hp and up to 1,100 Nm with Launch Control or Sport Boost. The M70 accelerates from 0 to 100 kmph in just 3.8 seconds. Its top speed is electronically limited to 250 kmph.

Despite its performance focus, the M70 offers a claimed WLTP range of 686 km.

Charging And Driver Assistance Features

The BMW i7 can charge from 10 to 80 percent in around 28 minutes using a 250 kW DC charger. BMW claims 235 km of range can be added in 10 minutes. Using a 22 kW AC charger, a full 0 to 100 percent charge takes around six hours. BMW also provides a complimentary Wallbox charger with installation for the i7 models.

Driver assistance equipment includes Cruise Control, Attentiveness Assistant and Parking Assistant Professional. The latter also supports remote parking through a smartphone.

Reversing Assistant Professional is also available. The i7 additionally gets Driving Assistant Plus with Stop&Go cruise control.

The BMW car also gets Steering and Lane Control Assistant and blind spot monitoring for additional driver support.

BMW 7 Series Rivals In India

The new BMW 7 Series still has plenty of competition in India.

The direct comparison competitors of its direct sedan variant include Mercedes Benz S Class and Mercedes Benz EQS. The new Audi Q9 will also join the high end SUV market.

The BMW 7 Series facelift thus brings all new fuel electric options to the flagship family. The i7 also provides a longer range alternative, and the M70 is a higher performance model.

BMW 7 Series Facelift: Is It Worth It?

The new BMW 7 Series facelift brings major changes to design, cabin technology and electric powertrains. Its new lighting elements and cleaner styling give the flagship sedan a fresh appearance.

The biggest practical change comes with the i7 eDrive50 and its 728 km WLTP range. The updated battery could make long distance electric travel easier for buyers.

The i7 M70 xDrive adds another option for buyers who want performance without moving away from electric power. Its 680 hp output and 3.8 second acceleration make it the fastest model here.

With local production of the i7 eDrive50, BMW has also expanded its India manufacturing footprint. The M70 remains a CBU model and costs Rs 2.65 crore.

For luxury buyers, the updated range now offers a wider choice between petrol refinement, long electric range and high performance electric driving.
