- BMW confirmed four and six-cylinder petrol powertrains with 48V mild-hybrid tech
- The top-spec M350 xDrive replaces the M340i.
- The G50-generation 3 Series was photographed without camouflage.
BMW has pushed the next-generation internal combustion engine (ICE) 3 Series into its final testing phase alongside its all-electric i3 counterpart. Ahead of the official world premiere scheduled for late September, the model was spotted unexpectedly undisguised at the Munich production facility. This is however, a very rare event, for a near-production model. Apart from all the speculations, BMW has cleared the fact that the new BMW 3 Series is getting 4- and 6-cylinder engines.
Technical Performance and Design Details
The upcoming petrol 3 Series (codenamed G50) utilizes an updated CLAR architecture while adopting design cues from BMW's Neue Klasse aesthetic. Despite sharing a visual identity with the electric i3, the ICE variant retains standalone underpinnings with a slightly shorter wheelbase and longer overhangs.

Key Technical & Visual Updates
- Powertrain Range: The core lineup will consist primarily of efficient four-cylinder engines paired with standard 48-volt mild-hybrid systems. The 3.0-litre inline-six is reserved for performance variants like the M350.
- Drift Moment Function: The M350 xDrive introduces a dedicated display-activated feature that routes 100% of engine power to the rear wheels for controlled oversteer.
- Design Leaks: Photos leaked from Munich reveal a redesigned rear end, flush pop-out door handles, and wider tracks compared to the previous generation.
- Cabin Tech: The interior is expected to feature a pillar-to-pillar windshield display interface matching the i3 lineup.
Car Junction Insights
BMW shows here its dual-track strategy, i.e. offering the ICE G50 3 Series and the EV NA0 i3 on visually unified platforms. This enables the brand to serve both electric adopters and traditional buyers without diluting design identity. Bumping output to 443 hp on the M350 xDrive establishes a clear performance distance over current competitors like the Audi S4 and Mercedes-AMG C43.
However, early online reactions to the leaked rear styling suggest BMW's Neue Klasse design direction remains polarizing among enthusiast communities. Production for the 2027 model year 3 Series is set to begin in the second half of 2026.
The next-gen 3 Series isn’t the only BMW sedan getting attention, discover the BMW 7 Series facelift, with its updated design, features and luxury appeal.
