Mahindra Climbs to No. 2 Spot in India’s Passenger Vehicle Market in 2025

Mahindra & Mahindra has achieved a major milestone in India’s passenger vehicle market in CY2025. According to Vahan data available till December 25, Mahindra has secured the second position, moving ahead of both Hyundai and Tata Motors for the first time in annual sales. Meanwhile, Maruti Suzuki continues to lead the market with around 17.5 lakh units.
Mahindra registered close to 5.81 lakh vehicles in 2025, showing a sharp rise from about 4.90 lakh units in 2024. As a result, the brand jumped from fourth place last year to second place this year, making it the biggest gainer among all carmakers. In addition, Mahindra’s January–November 2025 sales grew by 18 percent year-on-year, reflecting steady demand across months.
SUV-Only Strategy Works in Mahindra’s Favour
Mahindra’s strong performance is largely driven by its SUV-focused portfolio, which matches the growing customer preference for utility vehicles. Models such as the Scorpio, Thar, Bolero, XUV700, and 3XO have helped the brand maintain stable volumes throughout the year.
The Scorpio range remains Mahindra’s top-selling nameplate with over 1.61 lakh units, contributing nearly 28.03% of total sales. In addition, the Bolero and Bolero Neo continue to perform well in semi-urban and rural areas, together adding over 93,436 units.
The compact 3XO SUV also made a solid impact, selling more than 90,608 units and showing healthy year-on-year growth. However, the XUV700 saw a slight dip compared to last year, though it remains an important pillar for the brand.
Five-Door Thar Roxx Boosts Demand
Perhaps the biggest shift in Mahindra’s line-up this year is the rise of the Thar brand. Combined sales of the three-door Thar and the new five-door Thar Roxx crossed 1.07 lakh units, which marks a strong 55 percent growth. The Thar Roxx alone is estimated to contribute nearly two-thirds of these numbers, helping the Thar become Mahindra’s second best-selling model.
Electric SUVs Add New Momentum
Mahindra’s entry into born-electric SUVs has also added incremental growth. Models like the BE 6 and XEV 9e together contributed close to 7 percent of the company’s total volumes. While EV numbers are still modest, they strengthen Mahindra’s long-term growth story.
Overall, Mahindra’s rise to the No. 2 position highlights how strong SUVs, timely launches, and expanding EV offerings can reshape the market order.
