FASTag Annual Pass Fee Set to Rise Up to Rs. 3,075
Google News

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has announced a price revision for the FASTag Annual Pass. It will be effective from the start of the new financial year on April 1, 2026. The fee for the prepaid pass, (introduced for financial relief to daily highway commuters) will increase by ₹75. This will bring the total cost to ₹3,075.
Regulatory Alignment and Revised Fee Structure
The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH), the original stakeholder of FASTag, has announced this hike by releasing a notification. This adjustment is in accordance with the National Highways Fee (Determination of Rates and Collection) Rules, 2008. These rules mandate annual revisions of toll-related charges based on the Wholesale Price Index (WPI).
The key details of the updated fee structure include:
- New Rate: ₹3,075 (up from the current ₹3,000).
- Effective Date: April 1, 2026.
- Eligible Vehicles: Exclusively for non-commercial private vehicles (cars, jeeps, and vans).
- Scope: Valid at approximately 1,150 fee plazas across the National Highway and National Expressway network.
Usage Limit and Growing Adoption
The FASTag Annual Pass operates on a "whichever comes first" validity model. It remains active for one full year from the date of activation or until the vehicle completes 200 toll crossings. Once either limit is reached, the system automatically reverts to standard per-trip deductions from the user's linked FASTag wallet.
Since its official rollout on August 15, 2025, the scheme has seen rapid adoption. Current data suggests:
- User Base: Over 56 lakh (5.6 million) private vehicle owners have opted for the pass.
- Market Share: The pass now accounts for roughly 28% of all non-commercial car transactions on national highways.
- Procurement: Users can purchase or renew the pass via the 'Rajmarg Yatra' mobile application or the official NHAI portal. Activation typically occurs within two hours of payment.
While the ₹75 hike represents a 2.5% increase, the annual pass remains a cost-effective alternative for daily intercity commuters. For high-frequency travellers, the per-trip cost under the pass can be significantly lower than standard fees. However, motorists should note that the pass is not valid at toll plazas managed by state governments or local municipal bodies.
