After driving the BMW i5 LWB eDrive 35L for around 800km, I came away impressed by its comfort, smooth performance and spacious rear seat. This electric luxury sedan feels best suited to buyers who want a quiet, refined daily drive without giving up the performance expected from a BMW.
That claimed 669km range needs some context, though. The battery is 81.6kWh, with 76.3kWh usable, and what you actually get depends on how and where you drive. At Rs. 79.60 lakh (ex showroom), it makes a strong case for electric luxury. It isn't free of compromises. Here's what I liked and what I didn't.
BMW i5 LWB eDrive 35L: Price and Specifications

The i5 LWB eDrive 35L pairs a long wheelbase body with a rear wheel drive electric powertrain. The aim is obvious. Keep rear passengers comfortable while delivering the quick acceleration you expect from an electric car.
After several hundred kilometres, I would say the headline power figure isn't the story. How the car delivers it matters more day to day. So does the low cabin noise and the relaxed feel.
Here are the key specs to check before you spend your money.

The 268hp motor makes 410Nm and sends it to the rear wheels through a single speed transmission. No waiting for revs to build. You press, it goes. Joining faster traffic feels effortless.
The long wheelbase has a clear purpose. It's built for people who spend as much time in the back as behind the wheel. So cabin comfort matters a lot here.
Driving experience: Smooth, Quick and Easy to Live With

The first thing I noticed was how easily it builds speed. Torque arrives instantly, but it never feels abrupt. The accelerator is easy to modulate, which helps in traffic or when you're stuck behind slower cars.
268hp is plenty for everyday overtaking, and the claimed 0–100kph time is 6.7 seconds. But speed isn't why I'd buy it. My take: the best part is that it's quick without making every drive feel like work.
In the city, the single speed transmission keeps things simple. No gear changes interrupt the pull. The car moves off smoothly and you get none of the vibration of a running petrol engine.
There are different regenerative braking settings too. Regenerative braking recovers energy when the car slows down and sends it back to the battery. The Adaptive setting adjusts the level according to driving conditions. While the B mode provides stronger deceleration when you lift off the accelerator.
Try both on your test drive. They change how the car responds when you release the pedal, and your pick comes down to how you drive.
The brakes deserve attention as well. EVs blend regen with conventional friction brakes, and that handover changes pedal feel. Test them at low speeds and in firmer stops.
Don't judge them on one short, straight stretch. Ride comfort is a big attraction. The long wheelbase and suspension setup suit a luxury sedan meant to cover long distances. The cabin feels designed to keep you comfortable, not to remind you of every road imperfection.
That matters on Indian roads, where a smooth highway can turn into broken surfaces and speed breakers within a minute. The extra ground clearance over the international version helps. I'd still take tall speed breakers, steep ramps and broken patches slowly
This is a low slung luxury sedan, not an SUV.
Steering and road manners fit the role. It feels like a refined executive car, not a sports sedan. If you want comfort, easy acceleration and relaxed cruising, you'll love that balance.
BMW i5 LWB features: A Comfortable, Technology Focused Cabin

The dashboard is modern, with two big displays. A 12.3 inch digital instrument cluster sits next to a 14.9 inch infotainment touchscreen. It looks contemporary, though if you're new to BMW, the menus take some learning.
The system covers vehicle settings, navigation and entertainment. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto make daily use easier.
Here are the major features of the BMW car:
- Four zone automatic climate control.
- Electrically adjustable and ventilated front seats.
- A panoramic glass roof with ambient lighting.
- A 17 speaker Bowers & Wilkins audio system rated at 655W.
- A 360 degree camera for parking and tight manoeuvres.
- A head up display that projects driving information into the driver's view.
- Advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS).
- Digital Key Plus support for compatible smartphones.
- A powered boot lid and USB Type C charging ports.
Before booking the BMW i5 LWB, check with BMW which features are available in your chosen variant. Don't rely on a general feature list, as the equipment you get can make a difference to the ownership experience.
One thing I like about the cabin is how quiet it is. The electric motor makes very little noise, so you can talk easily and enjoy a more relaxed drive.
The rear seat is another strong point. The long wheelbase gives passengers more space, making the i5 LWB a good choice for owners who prefer to travel with a chauffeur. If you plan to sit in the back often, check the knee room, seat comfort and climate control. Spend some time in the rear seat before making a decision. Does it feel comfortable enough for your daily journeys?
However, a high price does not mean you get every feature you expect. Check which seat adjustments and comfort features are available. If you want rear seat controls or entertainment features, confirm that the car has them before booking.
Don't forget to check the driver's seat, either. Adjust the seat, steering wheel and displays to find a comfortable driving position. You should also try the controls yourself. Will they be easy to use every day? A short showroom visit may not give you the full answer, so take your time.
BMW i5 LWB range: What about real world driving?

Range is one of the biggest factors to weigh before you buy. BMW claims 669km on a full charge under the MIDC test cycle. The battery has a gross capacity of 81.6kWh, of which 76.3kWh is usable.
That certified figure is handy for comparing electric cars. It's not a guaranteed distance for any journey. Speed, traffic, air conditioning use, road conditions and driving style all change consumption.
On a long drive, I watch range as closely as comfort and performance. A luxury EV shouldn't make you think about charging all the time. So know your regular daily distance and what charging you have at home and work.
Real world range varies with those conditions. During our drive tests, it delivered around 390–400km. That's not a guaranteed result, and I wouldn't treat it as fixed for every route.
Plan longer journeys around dependable charging stops, not the maximum claimed distance. Leave a buffer for traffic, diversions and chargers that are unavailable when you arrive.
Home charging makes ownership far easier. With dedicated parking and a home wallbox, you charge overnight and start most mornings with a useful reserve. Without one, you'll lean on public infrastructure a lot more.
The car supports DC fast charging, but charging time depends on the charger's output, battery temperature and state of charge. In our tests, a 60kW charger took it from 20–80% in 45–50 minutes. That's a result under particular conditions, not a promise for every session.
If you travel between cities often, charger availability belongs in your buying decision. Check the routes you actually use, find suitable stops and confirm your preferred stations support compatible fast charging.
BMW i5 LWB Price and Rivals
The BMW i5 LWB eDrive 35L M Sport is priced at Rs. 79.60 lakh (ex showroom), but you'll pay more on the road. In Delhi, the base variant costs Rs. 82.33 lakh (on road).
Look beyond the showroom price and think about ownership cost, especially if this is your first electric luxury sedan. If you buy on EMI, monthly payments start at around Rs. 1,57,443. Your actual number depends on down payment, loan tenure and interest rate.
You have got other options at this price. Some use conventional petrol engines, some are electric, and some take a different approach to rear seat comfort.

Must validate the latest price and details of the particular variant with the manufacturer before buying.
If you are looking for a comparable executive sedan without switching to an all electric drivetrain, you may like the BMW 5 Series LWB. Its listed ex showroom price is Rs. 3 lakh less than the i5 LWB's. But fuel and maintenance costs will vary.
If you are looking for a luxury sedan where rear seat space reigns supreme, the executive segment gives you plenty to think about. The Mercedes Benz E Class remains the default benchmark for traditional petrol and mild hybrid loyalists who prefer quick petrol pumps over plug in stops.
The Lexus ES 500e sits on the opposite end as a direct electric rival, though evaluating whether its higher price tag makes sense means weighing its range, tech, and cabin against what BMW offers. Meanwhile, the Audi A6 stands out if you want a lower entry price and a classic petrol drivetrain, though its long term running costs and tech vibe feel completely different from BMW’s high tech EV setup.
So, is the BMW i5 LWB eDrive 35L Actually Worth Your Money?
After having a real world experience of i5 LWB, I will suggest it to buyers who want a refined electric luxury sedan. It offers smooth power delivery, a comfortable cabin and spacious rear seat. These features make it suitable for commuting, business travel and longer journeys.
But the main question is whether its electric range and charging requirements fit your routine. The claimed 669km range sounds good on paper, as the real world distance will depend on how you drive and where you charge. Home charging makes the ownership experience easier, while regular highway travel will require more planning.
Running costs may also be lower while comparing with petrol sedans, especially when you mostly charge your car at home. However, electricity tariffs, insurance, tyres, depreciation and total distance covered in a year will decide the final ownership cost.
I would recommend the BMW i5 LWB to buyers who value cabin refinement, rear seat comfort and smooth electric performance. Buyers without reliable charging access, or those who frequently cover long distances without convenient charging stops, should compare petrol cars first.
My Honest Take
The BMW i5 LWB eDrive 35L gets most things right for a luxury electric sedan. It is comfortable, quick and easy to drive every day. However, you need to plan your trips around its range. You also need to be careful on rough roads because of its ground clearance. If you have easy access to charging and are happy with the rear seat space, the i5 LWB could be a great choice in the premium electric car segment.
For me, the biggest plus point is how it makes everyday journeys feel special. I like its smooth acceleration, quiet cabin and spacious rear seat. But would I spend nearly Rs 80 lakh on it without checking my charging options and ground clearance first? Probably not.
