Tata Punch Spied Testing, Flex Fuel Variant Soon?

Tata Motors has been spotted testing a heavily camouflaged Punch facelift on Indian roads. The sighting has sparked speculation that the company may be developing a flex-fuel version of the compact SUV. If true, the model could become Tata's first vehicle capable of running on E85 ethanol-blended fuel.

The development comes at a time when the Indian government is actively promoting ethanol-based fuels to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Tata Motors had previously showcased the Punch Flex Fuel concept at the Bharat Mobility Expo 2025, indicating the company's interest in alternative fuel technologies. While Tata has not officially confirmed the purpose of the latest test vehicle, the possibility of it being a production-ready flex-fuel model cannot be ruled out.

Tata Punch Flex Fuel Could Support Up to E85 Ethanol Blend

The Punch Flex Fuel concept displayed in 2025 was based on the pre-facelift model and was engineered to run on ethanol blends of up to E85. If the recently spied test mule is part of Tata's flex-fuel program, it is likely to be based on the updated Punch facelift. Its facelift version was launched earlier this year with refreshed styling and feature updates.

To operate efficiently on higher ethanol blends, significant engineering changes are typically required. These may include revised fuel lines, upgraded injectors, ethanol-resistant fuel storage components, recalibrated engine management software, and modifications to the exhaust treatment system. Such upgrades help ensure compatibility with ethanol-rich fuels while maintaining performance.

Growing Focus on Flex-Fuel Vehicles in India

India's ethanol blending roadmap continues to expand, with the government working towards wider adoption of fuels containing higher ethanol content. Alongside Tata Motors, several other manufacturers are also exploring flex-fuel technology. Honda, Suzuki, and Hero MotoCorp have already introduced flex-fuel products, while brands such as Mahindra and Royal Enfield are reportedly evaluating similar solutions.

The timing of the latest Tata Punch sighting is particularly noteworthy, as Maruti Suzuki recently showcased the Wagon R Flex Fuel prototype. With multiple manufacturers now investing in ethanol-compatible vehicles, Tata could be aiming to introduce its own flex-fuel offering by late 2026 or early 2027. However, the company has yet to officially confirm the identity or purpose of the test vehicle, leaving room for speculation until further details emerge.
