Tata Motors has given its compact sedan a new name and a much needed update. The Tigor has now made way for the new Tata Aeris in India. Priced from Rs. 5.29 lakh, the Aeris gets revised styling, a redesigned cabin and several new features.
But here’s the catch. The Aeris is not an entirely new car underneath. It continues with the familiar 1.2-litre petrol engine and CNG powertrain from the Tigor. So, what exactly has changed? Let’s take a closer look.

Interestingly, the Aeris starts Rs. 31,000 lower than the Tigor's previous starting price. The biggest changes are therefore not limited to the name.
What is New in Tata Aeris Over Tigor?
The Aeris carries forward the basic idea of the Tigor but adds several changes around it. Here are the major updates.
1. New Exterior Design

The first thing you notice is the revised exterior. Tata has given the Aeris a different face instead of simply carrying forward the Tigor design.
The front gets slimmer LED headlamps with a revised grille and new bumper design. LED fog lamps are also available, which the Tigor did not offer.
The changes include:
- New LED headlamps with DRL elements
- Revised gloss black grille
- New front bumper
- LED fog lamps
- New alloy wheel design
- Revised rear bumper
- Updated tail lamp graphics
- New Aeris badging
- New exterior colour options
Meanwhile, the familiar notchback style remains. So, the Aeris still has the basic side profile that made the Tigor different from a regular three box sedan.
2. Cabin Gets a Major Update

This is where the Aeris takes a much bigger step over the Tigor.
The dashboard and centre console now follow the design seen in the updated Tiago. This includes a new two spoke steering wheel, a digital instrument cluster and a larger touchscreen.
The key cabin changes include:
- New two spoke steering wheel
- Digital instrument cluster
- 10.25 inch touchscreen infotainment system
- Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
- Revised centre console
- Rear AC vents
- Wireless phone charger
- Rotary gear selector on automatic variants
- Ventilated front seats
- Auto dimming IRVM
Additionally, the Aeris gets a revised cabin colour scheme with dual tone seats. The overall layout is more closely related to the latest Tiago than the outgoing Tigor.
3. New Architecture: From X1 to Evolved X-Alpha

The Tigor was based on Tata's older X1 architecture, which also underpinned the Tiago. The Aeris moves to an evolved X-Alpha architecture, bringing a newer structural and electronic foundation to the compact sedan.
But what does that actually change? X-Alpha is not just about changing the platform name. Tata has developed it around newer technology, safety and multi powertrain requirements. The Aeris also uses Ultra High Strength Steel as part of Tata's Safety Dome approach.

Interestingly, Tata's X-Alpha approach combines the cost focused strengths of its older X0 architecture with the newer electronic and software capabilities of the X4 ecosystem. It also supports multiple powertrain types including petrol, CNG and EV applications.
For Aeris, this means the change is deeper than a new dashboard or exterior design. The car gets a newer foundation for its electrical systems, safety equipment and technology while retaining the familiar 1.2-litre petrol and CNG engines.
4. Safety Equipment Gets an Upgrade

Tata has also added more safety equipment to the Aeris. Six airbags and three point seatbelts with reminders for all occupants are part of the package.
Depending on the variant, the Aeris gets:
- Six airbags
- Electronic Stability Control
- Hill Hold Assist
- Tyre Pressure Monitoring System
- Rear parking sensors
- 360 degree camera
- Blind View Monitor
- Rain sensing wipers
- Dashcam
- Rollover mitigation
- ISOFIX child seat anchors
Interestingly, the 360 degree camera also works with a blind view monitor. This gives the driver a wider view around the car while parking or moving through tight spaces.
What Has Not Changed in Tata Aeris?
Despite all these updates, Tata has not changed the basic mechanical package. The Aeris continues with the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine along with a factory fitted CNG option.

The CNG version continues with Tata's twin cylinder setup. This helps make better use of the available boot area compared with a conventional large CNG tank arrangement.
So, if you were expecting a new engine with the Aeris, that is not the case. The main focus is on the design, cabin and equipment rather than mechanical changes.
Tata Aeris vs Tigor: Dimensions and Practicality
The Aeris retains the compact sedan proportions of the Tigor. It also continues with a 419 litre boot, which gives it useful luggage space for a small sedan.

The biggest change here is therefore not about carrying more luggage. Instead, Aeris brings a fresher cabin and more technology while keeping the familiar sedan proportions.
Tata Aeris Price and Variants
Tata Aeris starts at Rs. 5.29 lakh (ex-showroom) and is available in 18 variants across five trim levels. These include Smart, Pure, Pure+, Creative and Accomplished.
The variant structure is fairly simple. The entry level Smart trim gets only Petrol MT and CNG MT options. Meanwhile, the Pure, Pure+, Creative and Accomplished trims get Petrol and CNG powertrains with both manual and AMT gearboxes.
Bookings are now open and deliveries are scheduled to begin in October. The Aeris is available with petrol and CNG powertrains along with manual and automatic gearboxes.
Conclusion
The New Tigor or Tata Aeris comes now with updated platform, features and most importantly, consumer centered approach. Being offered at a starting ex-showroom price of Rs. 5.29 Lakh, this compact sedan tries to attract buyers from the premium hatchback category, offering nearly the same features.
Apart from that, the Tata nameplate carries the guarantee of best safety, although the model has not undergone any safety test. The time now will decide whether people go with compact sedans with a strong build quality or still continue with premium hatchbacks.
