Renault Triber 1.0L Turbo-Petrol First Drive Review: Is It Finally Complete?
Table of Content

Everyone knows the classic family road trip scenario. You pack six or seven people into a car with luggage piled high up to the rear glass. You get onto a double lane highway, catch up to a slow truck and hit the throttle. In the original sub-four metre Renault Triber, that moment often felt like a test of patience, right?

That standard naturally aspirated 1.0-litre engine was brilliant for quick runs around crowded city streets. It was frugal, easy to park and offered immense space for its small footprint. But fully loaded on open highways, it ran out of breath quickly.

Renault finally answered enthusiasts and large families by dropping a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine into the Triber. There is absolutely no doubt that this added punch changes the entire dynamic of this budget 7- seater.

Here is what happens when you take the new Renault Triber 1.0L Turbo out for a proper drive.

Engine Specs and What Changed Under the Skin

We could jump straight into power figures, but the story under the bonnet goes deeper than raw numbers. Drop a bigger, punchier engine into a lightweight body and you face engineering challenges.

Interestingly, Renault could not just drop the turbo unit into the older platform. They upgraded the Triber to their newer Renault Group Entry Platform to fit the engine and handle the extra performance. Additionally, engineers reinforced the chassis all the way up to the C-pillar. They added structural weight, anti-roll bars and a high-capacity BLDC cooling fan to handle the additional heat.

Meanwhile, the engine itself produces 100 PS of power and 180 Nm of peak torque. Compare that to the standard model's 72 PS and 96 Nm, and you realise the torque has nearly doubled.

Here's the catch though. Renault tuned this engine differently than their smaller Kiger crossover.

City Driving: Smooth or Jumpy?

Renault Triber MPV city driving.webp

The Renault Triber gives an overall smooth performance in city drive conditions, although shows a little struggle at lower than 2000 RPMs.

From the experience we got from driving in a city like Delhi or Noida, the car is absolutely breezy in the first two gears. As soon as you press the engine start button, the familiar three-cylinder thrum greets you. Pulling from zero to first gear is smooth and same thing’s for the second gear. That is why congested traffic feels very similar to the regular non-turbo version. You do not get an aggressive surge forward that jerks your passengers around.

Challenge starts to kick-in when you go below 2,000 RPM for gears 3rd and above. The turbocharged engine seems to work harder and you quickly have to make a quick downshift. If you keep the revs low and shift early, the car drives in a calm and relaxed manner.

Other than that, the light electric steering wheel makes weaving through tight city traffic simple. You can twirl the wheel with a single finger while parking.

Highway Performance

This is the area where this Triber car shows its real purpose, that is justifying every extra rupee spent over the standard engine.

As we crossed the 2,000 RPM, the turbocharger performance took over and what you then experience is a solid wave of torque. And we checked that getting up to 80 or 100 kmph requires far less effort than you were having in the beginning. The Triber therefore moves forward with real enthusiasm.

As we cruise down the highway further, that traffic blocking the flow is really frustrating. Overtaking from behind the slow trucks with this car, thankfully, is really easy. Plus, as we used to do earlier - switching off the AC or building up momentum from half a kilometer back, disappears here. You press the pedal, the mid-range torque kicks in and you pass safely.

Now since we could pick up speed real quick and overtake like nothing, maintaining triple digit speeds feels relaxed therefore. The engine sat comfortably around 2,200 rpm at 100 km/h in fifth gear, meaning the cabin stays relatively quiet compared to the straining high revs of the standard car.

Here's the catch with enthusiastic highway driving. The engine gets quite loud if you push it past 4,500 rpm. It rewards smooth mid-range gear shifts rather than chasing the redline.

Ride Comfort and Handling Balance

Adding around 80 kg of structural weight and stiffer anti-roll bars changed how the Triber handles road imperfections.

At lower city speeds, the suspension feels slightly firmer than before. Sharp road joints and deep potholes filter a thud into the cabin if hit quickly. Additionally, speed bumps need to be tackled with a bit of care when the car is carrying just the driver.

Load up all three rows with family members and the ride quality improves significantly. The extra weight settles the suspension nicely over undulations.

Out on the open road, straight-line stability is quite good for a tall sub-four metre vehicle. You do get some wind noise around the side mirrors at 90 km/h, but it remains manageable.

Handling through corners is predictable as long as you remember what you are driving. It is a tall family MPV, not a hot hatchback. Drive it at sensible speeds through winding roads, and it stays composed. Try pushing hard into sharp turns, and the body roll together with tyre squeal will quickly remind you to slow down.

Cabin Space and Practical Features

As we get inside the cabin, the layout remains largely familiar, which is a good thing. The Triber continues to be a masterclass in space utilization.

The flexible seating arrangement remains its biggest selling point. You can slide, fold or completely remove the third row seats without needing any specialized tools. The front dashboard features an eight-inch touchscreen running wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The screen response is decent, though direct sunlight can make it a little hard to read at times.

You also get dual air conditioning units with dedicated vents for all three rows, which is a lifesaver during Indian summers. Storage spots are scattered everywhere, including two gloveboxes and a cooled central console storage bin.

Safety equipment has also seen a welcome update. Electronic Stability Control, Hill Start Assist, Traction Control and Tyre Pressure Monitoring come standard across the turbo lineup.

Fuel Efficiency and Pricing

Fuel efficiency matters to every MPV buyer in India. The official ARAI rating for the Triber Turbo manual sits at 21 km/l.

In real-world conditions, turbo-petrol engines are notoriously sensitive to throttle inputs. Drive gently with a light foot, and you can expect around 13 to 15 km/l in mixed city conditions. Push the engine hard on the highway, and that figure will drop rapidly.

Prices for the Triber Turbo start at Rs 7.85 lakh and go up to Rs 9.21 lakh (ex-showroom) for the top trim. That puts it at roughly Rs 90,000 to Rs 1.1 lakh more expensive than the equivalent non-turbo variants.

The Verdict

The Renault Triber had all the attributes already: it was already known for the flexibility of its cabin and for its compact exterior dimensions and aggressive price. The only downside to it was the lack of highway overtaking power under full load.

The 1.0L Turbo is the answer to that. It adds the necessary mid-range torque to make long highway journeys relaxed and strain-free.

In the case of occasional urban driving, such as going for the week's groceries, the natural aspirated version is still a good buy. If you're on the road every day with all the gear, however, it's no contest to opt for the Turbo version and pay the higher price.

It takes the Triber from a no-frills budget mover to a true 7-seater family car.
