The Indian automobile market started 2026 with a strong performance in January, with EV cars dominating the sales charts. The SUV segment took the maximum volume of car sales this January, solidifying the fact that it is the first choice of most consumers. Tata Motors registered itself as the biggest seller, followed by Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai.
Let’s have a look at some statistics and analyse the changing demands of Indian consumers.

Tata Nexon (Including Nexon EV) registered a total sales of 23,365 units, becoming the best selling car in Jan-2026. Compared to sales of Jan-2025, it showed a 52% YoY growth.
The brand’s 5-star safety rating and a wide range of powertrain options, including petrol, diesel and EV contributed to its sales. And the recent facelift and other feature updates have attracted a lot of audience to buy the car.

Maruti Suzuki Dzire has defied the SUV trend and became the second best selling car in January with 19,629 units sold. Although the car showed a subtle 3% YoY growth, its sales have been consistent over the years. This Sedan’s unparalleled fuel efficiency, reliable performance, and Maruti Suzuki’s extensive service network helped it reach the sales marks.

Another Tata Car, Punch and Punch EV, sold 19257 units. This micro-SUV experienced a phenomenal 45% YoY growth, largely because of its recent 2026 facelift. Its build, high road clearance and attractive price point make it an ideal choice.

Hyundai Creta, a mid-sized SUV, is another popular choice for customers preferring SUVs in the affordable range. This SUV car registered 7,921 units in sales. Although there was a slight dip in sales of -5% YoY compared to Jan-2025 sales, the Creta remains a formidable player. Its premium interiors, feature-packed cabin and powerful engine helped it push into the top-7 sellers last month. The Creta EV, introduced late last year, is also steadily contributing to its overall volumes.

India’s most loved MPV - Maruti Suzuki Ertiga bragged 5th position with the sales of 17,892 units and 12% YoY growth. Its large capacity combined with an affordable price makes it a favoured choice for families and commercial fleet operators.

This iconic hatchback car has made its position amidst the newly SUV oriented Indian markets. Maruti Suzuki Swift registered sales of 17,806 units with an impressive 18% YoY growth. Its peppy engine, agile handling and compact dimensions still appeal to a significant portion of Indian buyers.

Maruti Suzuki Brezza sold 17,486 units with a solid 15% YoY growth, supported by its design, fuel efficiency and comprehensive features. This Maruti SUV appeals to the SUV lovers in the Indian market.
January 2026 has set a clear tone for the year, with SUVs category being the most favourable one. Analysis shows the demand for EV segment is set to grow more in Indian markets.
