Maruti Suzuki Commences Flex-Fuel WagonR Deliveries in Delhi

Maruti Suzuki India Limited has officially commenced retail deliveries of its highly anticipated WagonR Flex Fuel hatchback in New Delhi. This is a historic moment as Maruti becomes the first manufacturer to deploy a flex-fuel passenger vehicle into the Indian automotive market. This commercial rollout follows multiple public prototype showcases and represents a massive breakthrough for the domestic transport sector. This proves the viability of alternative fuel powertrains in affordable, mass-market cars.

First Batch Handed Over in Capital

The carmaker delivered the initial batch directly to the Indian Sugar and Bio-energy Manufacturers Association (ISMA) during an event in New Delhi. The keys were handed over at a corporate dealership to test the longevity and operational viability of multi-blend engines under real-world traffic conditions.

Powertrain and Fuel Adaptability

The new hatchback can operate smoothly on various ethanol-petrol blends. This will scale all the way from standard E20 up to E100 pure bio-ethanol fuel.

  • Engine Configuration: The car features a heavily modified 1.2-litre petrol engine that produces 90 bhp and 113.7 Nm of peak torque.
  • Gearbox Option: The engine configuration is paired strictly with a five-speed manual transmission, with no automatic variant currently available.
  • Variant Foundation: This eco-friendly vehicle is structurally built upon the standard model's top-spec ZXi+ trim.

Variant Pricing and Running Costs

The flex-fuel version costs Rs 7.24 lakh (ex-showroom), an Rs 85,000 premium over the regular petrol ZXi+ model. However, it leverages significantly cheaper alternative fuel choices. The government recently introduced specific E85 fuel stations across Delhi where the blend costs Rs 82.12 per litre. This pricing makes it roughly Rs 20 cheaper per litre than standard E20 petrol.

This rollout directly aligns with Union Minister Nitin Gadkari’s vision to heavily promote sustainable biofuels across the country. By utilizing cheaper local ethanol, the initiative aims to drop crude oil imports and lower urban tailpipe emissions. The success of this pilot will serve as a crucial indicator for India’s future mass-market biofuel infrastructure.
