The Indian passenger vehicle (PV) segment recorded its best-ever August retail performance in August 2026. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), total passenger vehicle retail sales reached 4,02,398 units during the month. In comparison, the segment retailed 3,46,468 units in August 2025, registering a 16.14% Year-on-Year (YoY) growth.
On a sequential basis, retail registrations registered a slight easing. Compared to 4,16,555 units sold in July 2026, PV retail decreased by 3.40% Month-on-Month (MoM) due to seasonal monsoon impacts. FADA attributed the overall YoY growth to expanding rural demand, healthy advance booking pipelines and steady customer pull across vehicle categories. A major milestone was reached as the aggregate share of non-petrol alternative fuel passenger vehicles which encompasses CNG, Hybrids and EVs. This reached an overall 41.95%, overtaking petrol vehicles (40.85%) for the first time in history.

Official Statement
Reflecting on the passenger vehicle segment's performance, FADA President Mr. Sai Giridhar said:
“Passenger Vehicle retails were 4,02,398 units, up 16.14% YoY — the best-ever August and the first time PV has crossed the 4-lakh mark in an August — though 3.40% lower MoM. The Bharat-led character was stark: Rural PV grew 24.99% YoY against Urban’s 10.93%. Beyond the volume record, the fuel mix reached a genuine inflection — alternative fuels (CNG 25.28%, Hybrid 9.04%, EV 7.63%) together touched 41.95%, edging past petrol/ethanol at 40.85% for the first time, though petrol still remains the single largest individual fuel. Dealers attribute the shift to running-cost economics and continuing consumer hesitation around the E20 transition, which is nudging petrol buyers towards CNG, hybrids and EVs. On the channel side, PV inventory rose by a further 5 days over July-end to around 38–40 days — well above FADA’s recommended 21-day benchmark, with 56% of PV dealers reporting higher stock month-on-month. With festive stocking now underway, we urge PV OEMs to bill strictly to retail so that dealer capital is not locked in ageing inventory.”
Car Junction’s Outlook and Key Monitorables
Looking forward to the upcoming primary festive period, dealer sentiment remains optimistic yet balanced. According to FADA's dealer survey, 67.09% of dealers anticipate growth in September 2026 as Ganesh Chaturthi, Onam, and early festive preparations build order books. However, elevated dealer inventory levels (38–40 days) and monsoon-related demand pauses in specific regional pockets remain key monitorables for channel health.
