Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 and GLE 63 S Facelift Revealed with New V8 Engine
Google News

Mercedes-AMG has introduced updated versions of its flagship performance SUVs, the GLS 63 and GLE 63 S. The mid-cycle facelift brings subtle design changes, upgraded interior tech, and a heavily revised V8 engine. While peak power remains unchanged, AMG has focused on improving efficiency, response, and overall refinement through engineering updates.
Both SUVs continue to serve as the brand’s full-size performance offerings, combining luxury, advanced dynamics, and strong straight-line performance. The biggest change is the new M177 EVO V8 engine that brings mechanical upgrades aimed at sharper response and better drivability.
Revised M177 EVO V8 Engine with Hybrid Support
The key highlight of the update is the revised 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, now called the M177 EVO, paired with a 48V mild-hybrid system. The engine continues to produce 603 bhp and 850 Nm of torque, delivered via a 9-speed automatic gearbox and AMG’s 4Matic+ all-wheel-drive system.
The major mechanical update is the introduction of a flat-plane crankshaft, inspired by motorsport design. This reduces rotational mass inside the engine, improving throttle response and efficiency. The mild-hybrid system adds up to 23 bhp in short bursts, assisting acceleration and low-speed refinement.
Exterior Design Gets Sharper AMG Styling
The updated GLS 63 and GLE 63 S adopt revised styling inspired by the facelifted standard GLE and GLS models. Both SUVs feature redesigned LED headlamps with a three-point star signature and a larger, more defined front grille.
The AMG Panamericana grille with vertical slats remains a key design highlight, paired with sportier bumpers and refreshed aerodynamic elements. New alloy wheel designs, offered in sizes up to 23 inches, further enhance the road presence. Despite these updates, the overall silhouette remains familiar and retains the strong, muscular stance expected from AMG SUVs.
Interior: Updated Displays and AMG-Specific Finishing
Inside, both SUVs feature a layout similar to the updated standard models, but with AMG-specific detailing. The digital cockpit now includes AMG-exclusive graphics and performance-focused display themes, giving the cabin a more driver-oriented feel.
Seats come with AMG branding and embossed headrests, while trim options include carbon fibre and aluminium finishes. Moreover, customers can choose additional customisation through Mercedes’ Manufaktur program, offering a wider range of upholstery and interior combinations for a more personalised experience.
Performance and Driving Dynamics
Despite internal upgrades, performance figures remain unchanged:
- GLE 63 S: 0–100 km/h in 3.9 seconds
- GLS 63: 0–100 km/h in 4.2 seconds
- Top speed: 280 km/h
AMG has also revised intake and exhaust systems, camshaft profiles, and turbocharger housing for better response. The exhaust now features adjustable flaps that modify the engine note depending on drive mode.
Both SUVs continue to use AMG Ride Control+ air suspension with active damping, offering variable ride height and improved body control. Additional hardware includes active roll stabilisation, reinforced drivetrain components, and torque vectoring via an electronic rear differential.
Market Launch Timeline
The updated Mercedes-AMG GLS 63 and GLE 63 S are expected to go on sale in global markets in the coming months. India is likely to receive both models in 2026, continuing AMG’s strong presence in the high-performance luxury SUV segment.
