Kia Sorento Sells 1,739 Units in First Month, Challenges Premium SUV Rivals

The Kia Sorento recorded 1,739 units in wholesale dispatches in September 2026, its first full month on sale in India. Launched on September 4, the premium three row SUV contributed around 5% to Kia India's record monthly dispatches of 32,017 units. 

The Kia Sorento's ex showroom prices range from Rs 27.99 lakh to Rs 40.39 lakh, giving buyers a new option in the premium SUV segment.

Kia Sorento Sales After Launch

Kia dispatched another 365 units to dealerships in August, before the official launch. This takes its total wholesale dispatches across August and September to 2,104 units.

However, wholesale dispatches represent vehicles sent to dealerships, not confirmed customer deliveries. The Sorento ranked fifth among Kia's models in September.

Kia Sorento Engine Options

The Kia car is available with two powertrain options:

• 1.6 litre turbo petrol strong hybrid: A 180hp petrol engine paired with a 65hp electric motor.
• 2.2 litre diesel: Produces 193hp and 442Nm of torque.

The SUV also offers six seat and seven seat configurations. Buyers can choose according to their family size and seating needs.

Kia Sorento Faces Established Rivals

The Sorento competes with the Jeep Meridian, Skoda Kodiaq and Volkswagen Tayron. Its localisation is another key difference, as the Skoda and Volkswagen rivals are assembled from imported kits.

For buyers, the choice will depend on pricing, seating preferences, powertrain requirements and ownership costs. Its first month dispatches suggest an encouraging start, but sustained demand will determine its longer term performance.

Kia India Records Monthly Sales Record

Kia India dispatched 32,017 vehicles in September, its highest monthly total since entering the Indian market. The figure was up 41% year on year, according to the company's sales announcement.

The Seltos and Sonet remained its biggest volume drivers. Together, these models accounted for 74% of Kia's 168,683 utility vehicle dispatches during the first half of FY2027.

The Sorento now adds a premium three row SUV to the brand's Indian portfolio. Its coming monthly sales figures will show whether it can maintain this initial momentum.

Car Junction Insights

In my opinion, the Kia Sorento's first month dispatches are encouraging, but they don't yet confirm strong customer demand. Its hybrid and diesel options give buyers flexibility, while six and seven seat layouts suit different family needs. I believe pricing, real world fuel efficiency and long term ownership costs will determine its success against established rivals.
