Indian Markets Registers 18052 EV Car Sales in Jan 2026

The Indian EV market recorded the third highest electric vehicle sales after Aug-2025 with 18,052 vehicles sold totally. Previously, October-2025 recorded the highest sales with 19,195 units sold and August-2025 with 18,563 units sold.
This marks a 51% monthly YOY growth compared to 11,909 units sold in Jan-2025. This increased sales shows Indian customers are moving towards options more sustainable and eco-friendly.
Top 5 Market Performers
Although all brands experienced an increase in their sales, some long-standing brands acquired the most volume in Jan-2026 EV takeouts. TATA stands at the top with holding approx. 43.5% market sales. JSW MG Motors India, Mahindra & Mahindra, Vinfast and Hyundai trailed behind. Here’s the market breakdown with top 5 performers:
1. TATA Motors
- Tata Motors brags the top spot with the sales of 7,852 units in Jan-2026.
- Acquired almost 43.5% of market share.
- Harrier EV, Punch EV and Nexon EV were the top selling models. Curvv EV saw moderate traction in the coupe-SUV niche.
2. JSW MG Motor India
- 4606 units sold, becoming the second largest EV seller in Jan-2026
- Gained a market share of ~25.5%.
- This time, MG saw 2% YoY increase in their sales, with the Windsor EV being their top performer. The company is now planning a next phase of growth with the launch of their Multi-Purpose Vehicles (MVPs).
3. Mahindra & Mahindra
- Sales of 3589 units.
- Market share covered about 20%.
- Massive 386% YoY increment. “Born Electric” SUVs drove the sales, with the top selling models being BE 6 and XEV 9e. The newly launched XEV 9S is also beginning to contribute.
4. VinFast and Hyundai
- VinFast sold 432 units while Hyundai sold 326 units.
- Both brands hold 4.2% total market share.
- The Vietnamese brand VinFast overtook Hyundai. Meanwhile, Hyundai saw a dip of 2% YoY sales this time. Also, this January marked the cross of 1,000 VinFast sales in India, with VF6 and VF7 being the top selling ones.
The “Big Three” (TATA, MG and Mahindra) now cover 90% of the EV market; other players are also showing their dominance. The iconic rise of Mahindra EV indicated that there is going to be a tough tussle between the other two top players.
Expert analysis predicts annual sales of 2.5 lakh units in CY2026, as markets saw 18000+ sales in a non-festive season.
