Road Travel More Safe Now: Govt Proposes V2V Communication System – Check Rollout Date

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways has proposed a Vehicle to Vehicle (V2V) communication system for India through draft rules. The phased rollout will begin on October 1, 2027.
The proposal aims to improve road safety by allowing nearby vehicles to exchange real time information. If approved, the system could support safer driving in future cars and two wheelers sold in India.
Vehicle to Vehicle Communication System Explained
The proposed Vehicle to Vehicle communication system will let nearby vehicles share information such as speed, position, direction and acceleration. This data can warn drivers about potential hazards before they become visible.
The system can alert drivers about sudden braking, forward collision risks, unsafe lane changes, and approaching emergency vehicles. Unlike cameras or radar, V2V can share information beyond the driver's direct line of sight.
The government says this technology will complement existing Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). It is also expected to support connected mobility and reduce accident risks on Indian roads.
Cars such as the Mahindra XEV 9e, Tata Harrier EV, Hyundai Creta Electric, and MG Windsor EV could benefit from such connected technologies in the future.
Rollout Timeline for V2V Communication System
The draft notification proposes a phased implementation.
- From October 1, 2027, V2V equipped L, M, and N category vehicles must comply with AIS 230.
- From October 1, 2028, all newly manufactured L, M, and N category vehicles must be fitted with AIS 230 compliant V2V systems.
The phased rollout gives manufacturers enough time to develop, test, and integrate the technology before it becomes mandatory.
AIS 230 Standard and Safety Features
AIS 230 sets the minimum technical, functional, environmental, and cybersecurity requirements for V2V communication systems. It also covers radio performance, positioning accuracy, electrical requirements, and communication security.
The standard uses Cellular Vehicle to Everything (C V2X) technology in the 5.875 GHz to 5.925 GHz frequency band. This frequency has already been exempted from licensing by the Department of Telecommunications.
The first safety applications include Emergency Brake Alert, Forward Collision Warning, Wrong Way Driving Alert, and Emergency Vehicle Alert.
What It Means for Car Buyers
The proposal does not require existing vehicle owners to upgrade their vehicles. Instead, the rules will apply to new vehicles manufactured after the proposed dates.
For buyers, the biggest benefit could be fewer crashes through earlier warnings. Manufacturers may also add more connected safety features as the technology becomes widely available. The ministry will review public comments after 30 days before issuing the final notification.
