The Indian Passenger Vehicle segment recorded a gross total sales of 4,27,213 units in September-2026, marking a new shift in customer priorities. According to Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), the segment saw a rise of 32.10% growth on yearly basis and 6.17% on monthly basis.
This time interestingly, both urban and rural demands came in a close tie with YoY growths being 32.11% and 32.09% respectively. The fuel mix reached an inflection point as petrol (41.27%) marginally reclaimed the lead over alternative fuels (41.00%). This shows that August's historic crossover was a dynamic parity rather than a permanent flip. Meanwhile, EV adoption surged to a fresh peak of 8.45% while CNG market share eased slightly.

Official Statement
Reflecting on the automotive market performance, FADA President Mr. Sai Giridhar stated:
"Passenger Vehicle retails were the best-ever September at 4,27,213 units, up 32.10% YoY and 6.17% MoM, with Urban and Rural growing almost in lockstep (+32.11% and +32.09% YoY). The fuel mix offered the month’s most watched signal: after alternative fuels overtook petrol for the first time in August, September saw the two settle into a near dead-heat, with petrol nudging marginally back ahead at 41.27% against alternative fuels’ 41.00% (CNG 23.11%, Hybrid 9.44%, EV 8.45%). The August crossover was therefore an inflection, not a decisive flip — petrol and alternative fuels are now effectively at parity, trading the lead month to month, even as EV share rose to a fresh high and CNG eased. On the channel side, PV inventory rose by a further 5 days over August-end to around 43–45 days — well above FADA’s recommended 21-day benchmark, with 60% of PV dealers reporting higher stock due to upcoming festivals."
Car Junction Insights
The passenger vehicle segment in September 2026 reflected intense competition as Mahindra & Mahindra marginally dethroned Tata Motors for the #2 retail spot (57,343 vs. 57,254 units). This time it proved that aggressive SUV-led strategies continue to pay off. However, rising dealer inventories reaching 43–45 days ahead of the festive season pose a distinct margin risk if retail conversions fall short. Meanwhile, VinFast Auto India emerged as the fastest-rising brand, soaring from near-zero a year ago to 2,964 units (a 0.69% market share), signaling a rapid shift in consumer appetite toward emerging electric vehicle players.
