Kia India Introduces BaaS Program for Carens Clavis EV

Kia India has announced the expansion of its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) program to include the upcoming Carens Clavis EV. Designed to lower the buying cost of electric vehicles, the initiative decouples the battery cost from the vehicle’s purchase price. This will allow customers to pay for battery usage through a monthly subscription or a per-kilometer rental model.

Strategic Pricing and Dual-Loan Financing

The core of this initiative is a unique dual-loan structure. Under this system, buyers take out two separate loans: one for the vehicle's "chassis" (the car body and mechanicals) and another for the battery component. This approach effectively brings the purchase price of the Carens Clavis EV closer to that of traditional petrol or diesel MPVs.

Key Features of the Kia BaaS Plan:

  • Lower Entry Price: The chassis-only price for the Standard Pack starts at Rs. 12.84 lakh, compared to the full ex-showroom price of Rs. 17.99 lakh.
  • Pay-per-Kilometer: Users are charged a transparent battery rental fee of Rs. 3.3 per kilometer.
  • Extended Financing: While the vehicle body loan carries a 60-month tenure, the battery component can be financed for up to 96 months (8 years).
  • Tiered Options: The plan is available for both the 42 kWh (Standard) and 51.4 kWh (Extended Range) battery variants.

Kia’s BaaS program is a calculated move to "democratize" EV ownership in India by addressing the high initial cost. By partnering with major banks like HDFC and ICICI, Kia is providing a financial safety net for first-time EV buyers. This shift from "ownership of the battery" to "usage of the battery" could set a new benchmark for how mass-market EVs are sold in the Indian market.
