Kia India has announced the expansion of its Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) program to include the upcoming Carens Clavis EV. Designed to lower the buying cost of electric vehicles, the initiative decouples the battery cost from the vehicle’s purchase price. This will allow customers to pay for battery usage through a monthly subscription or a per-kilometer rental model.
The core of this initiative is a unique dual-loan structure. Under this system, buyers take out two separate loans: one for the vehicle's "chassis" (the car body and mechanicals) and another for the battery component. This approach effectively brings the purchase price of the Carens Clavis EV closer to that of traditional petrol or diesel MPVs.

Kia’s BaaS program is a calculated move to "democratize" EV ownership in India by addressing the high initial cost. By partnering with major banks like HDFC and ICICI, Kia is providing a financial safety net for first-time EV buyers. This shift from "ownership of the battery" to "usage of the battery" could set a new benchmark for how mass-market EVs are sold in the Indian market.
