BMW India has expanded its portfolio with the launch of the M440i xDrive Convertible, priced at Rs 1.09 crore (ex-showroom). The premium 4-seater soft top car arrives as a direct rival to the Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet, blending high-end performance with an open-top driving experience.
Design and Performance Capabilities
The newly launched model features a significant design shift from its predecessor, moving from a folding hard-top to a fabric soft-top. This roof mechanism can be operated at speeds of up to 50kph, completing its cycle in 18 seconds. Aesthetic highlights include the "beaver teeth" vertical kidney grille, "snake eyes" LED headlights, and 19-inch staggered alloy wheels. The wheels are - 225/45 R19 front and 255/35 R19 rear.
For the engine, the vehicle utilizes the "B58" 3.0-litre straight-six turbo-petrol engine, the same unit found in the popular M340i sedan. Power is delivered to all four wheels via an 8-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s xDrive system.

Interior Tech and Market Positioning
The cabin adopts a 2+2 seating configuration and inherits the dual-screen Curved Display from recent BMW updates. This includes a 14.9-inch infotainment touchscreen and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.
Standard equipment for the Indian market includes:
- Audio: 12-speaker Harman Kardon sound system.
- Seating: Power-adjustable front seats with memory functions (shared with M340i).
- Convenience: Head-up display (HUD), wireless charging, and automatic climate control.
- Safety: Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and adaptive cruise control.
The M440i xDrive Convertible enters a niche segment in the Indian luxury market. While it shares its powertrain with the M340i, the Convertible is 0.5 seconds slower to 100kph. This is due to the added weight of the roof mechanism and chassis reinforcements.
With this launch, BMW offers a middle ground between standard luxury sedans and full-blown M-models. Priced at Rs 1.09 crore, it undercuts the Mercedes-Benz CLE Cabriolet (Rs 1.16 crore), by approximately Rs 7 lakh. The introduction of the M440i reflects a growing demand for lifestyle-oriented performance vehicles in the Indian premium car segment.
